Richard Edwards, Ph.D., is a professor of communications at Baylor University and a seasoned college and high school debate coach. This is a really great book. I am an English teacher/librarian with no real experience coaching debate, but this really got me on the right track. I would recommend it for debaters and coaches, and I think there is something in here even for experienced debaters. Other reviewers have mentioned that the research section was a bit dated, but this book was easily worth it's weight in gold to someone like me, even if you tear those pages out. I think even public forum debaters who have so much less technical stuff to deal with would benefit from reading the chapters on Policy debate so they can understand the pedigree of Public Forum, how the "stock issues" work, etc.

Great Resource Book for Students

I advise the student-led debate club at our community college. Though I believe the guide was written primarily for high school debate coaches, I bought copies for the officers of our debate club after first reading it myself. The guide is straight-forward and has a lot of clear explanations and examples that can be applied immediately. Though I have to buy copies of this guide out of my own pocket since we don't have a budget for them in my department, I will be purchasing them again this year for my students - I think it is a good investment.

This book really gives you a basic understanding of debate fundamentals. I've even used this book as a guide in my debate rounds! It is a somewhat outdated book, regarding common debate terms, but still applies in modern competitive debate. The quality of the book, however, was lower than what I expected. Highlighter and worn pages were frequent throughout the book.

Useful, viable, readable, helpful.

I am naturally creative. I write music, books, poetry. I decorate, paint, garden and cook. I have inventions and workshops that are original and
enterprising. Still, there is a lot to benefit from in this book.
First of all, Odunsi mentions that things that work for me...including being in nature, taking risks, expanding your circle, changing your
habits....but there is more.

There is a lot of meat here too..this might have been a college thesis, for example. Its not all fluff. If you want to break out into your best
self, this book is an excellent guide. GO FOR IT!

About the Author
George W. Noblit became a sociologist in the 1970s, a time of turbulent social change. Research on crime, delinquency and deviance led to a focus on schooling in the lives and futures of youth. Through a study of school desegregation, he began a program of research on the social construction of race, using ethnographic research to study schools and other educational scenes. Noblit is intrigued with how knowledge―often taken as good in its own right―is implicated in creating the very problems it is asked to solve. Noblit studies the various ways knowledge is constructed and how the competition over which knowledge counts construct powers and difference. This process means exploring both the highest reaches of theory and the everyday lives of people as they struggle to make sense of the world. To Noblit, “there is not a theory-practice gap, only a failure of imagination.” Noblit conducts funded evaluation projects, most recently on A+ (arts-enhanced) schools (the subject of his 2009 book), charter schools and prison education for youth adult offenders in North Carolina. “For me, evaluation and policy studies are a way to be part of larger political processes in our society,” he says, “and to help shape the agendas of important innovations.”

Inspiration for Applying Scrum

The first thing to know is that this isn't a detailed guide to Scrum practices, though there is a summary of the key practices in an appendix. Since there are lots of guides to Scrum at the practices at varying levels of details, having more about what the practices are would not add a lot of value. This book does inform you about how scrum works by helping you to understand the value of Scrum through stories of Scrum in use in various domains, and not just software.. The book is full of war stories (both literally and figuratively), and Sutherland is clearly proud of how he, his family, and organizations he has worked with, have applied scrum. Reading this book will help energize you to use Scrum to help your team succeed. This is not the only book on Scum you need. But if you want motivation to explore more about Scrum, or if you have been practicing Scrum for a while and are looking for renewed inspiration, give this book a read.

Best starter resource on scrum on the market

Why did I choose this book? Its the premier book in scrum created by one of its founders. And it had fantastic reviews.

Do NOT listen to people who say "it doesn't teach you how to implement scrum." yes it does. There is an appendix implantation guide at the end and the "why" and "how" all throughout the book.

What was my experience reading the book? It was a very easy read. The voice of the book was pleasant and flowed well.

It told of the history of scrum and how each role, each event, and each artifact developed and now what the best practices are.

This book will get anyone up to speed on scrum.

Would I recommend it to others? Of course, if they want to learn scrum, this is the bet place to start without a doubt.

Anecdotal discussion of Scrum's basis

This is NOT a primer or tutorial for using Scrum. It is a good treatment of Scrum's fundamental concepts, their origins and their purpose in achieving specific objectives.
The author uses productivity as the hook to garner interest, and he does equate many concepts with productivity impact.
But, the comments on productivity are almost entirely anecdotal and qualitative. This is not unexpected, productivity across projects (or even sprints), can be hard to measure quantitatively in any meaningful way.

For some reason, the author tries hard to avoid using software projects as examples. Possibly, he wants to pitch scrum to a much wider audience. Maybe for good reason, since Scrum is type cast as a software process. But the author may have gone too far the other way. The structure and repetitiveness of software developments lend themselves to iterative processes and help prospective users understand how Scrum practices add value & can improve outcomes.
These benefits can be harder to see with some other types of projects.

The stories used are interesting, but a bit too anecdotal for me. I would have liked to see more data to back up his assertions. (This book is VERY light on real data).

Overall, a good book to introduce the uninitiated in what scrum is, and more importantly, why you want to bring it into your organization.

Jinichi Tokeshi, M.D., was born and raised in Okinawa, Japan. After completing his medical studies in Hawai'i, he opened a private practice in Honolulu and began teaching at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawai'i, He has attained a yondan in kendo and a sandan in iaido.

Succinct guide to the art of Kendo.

Jinichi Tokeshi provides a succinct albeit comprehensive guide to Kendo and all that is entails. It begins with a short history of Kendo in an effort to familiarize the reader with the origins of the "sport". Tokeshi then spends some time on the necessities such as equipment and the correct manner in which to wear the kendogi and bogu! He also pays strict attention to appropriate etiquette and behaviour. The book deals with the movements, strikes, general philosophy, rules, regulations and ends with short biographies on historically significant samurai/Kendo masters! All in all the book amicably demonstrates the "elements, rules, and philosophy" of Kendo and as a new student to the Japanese art of fencing it has proved indispensable.

this book is really useful

Dr. Tokeshi's book is great. It covers everything from the philosophy and history behind kendo to waza (techniques) and the basics of equipment care. Not to mention the comprehensive section on nitto ryu and the Nihon Kendo Kata. Using Dr. Tokeshi's book I've learned to take apart and maintain my shinai and how to fold my keikogi and hakama. I especially like the sections where he explains the reasons behind the different kamae and what the different kata is supposed to teach you.

Excellent new addition to the English Kendo Library

I am a beginner in Kendo so take this all with a grain of salt.

I thought this was a tremendous book. Well written, clear, and thorough. I think it rivals "Kendo: the Definitive Guide" as one of the two best Kendo books. Particularly interesting, though not useful unless you're already a sandan or so, are the sections on Nito and Jodan. I haven't seen info on those kamae in English anywhere else.

Good book and a worthy addition to your library.

From the bitterly cold winter morning when he leaves his Minneapolis home in 1943, to his return at the end of the war, this book celebrates those who served during World War II, while embracing the complex range of emotions and experiences that are unique to a time of war. In his memoir, Moore provides a first-person account of his service during World War II and the people and experiences he encountered along the way. “We were a B-24 bomber crew,” Moore writes, “our ten and twelve hour missions were entirely over the wide Pacific, and on a couple of occasion we brushed very close to history. They were experiences that flash in my mind, snapshots that will be with me forever.” This is one soldier’s extraordinary story.

Compelling story, beautifully written!

This beautifully written story of a young man's journey into war gives us a rare glimpse into the heart and mind of the Greatest Generation. With the continued passing of WWII veterans, this is a rare opportunity to walk in the experience in a highly personal and historically compelling way.
