Can't find it anywhere and haven't read it, yet it was published a month and a half ago

I want to make it clear up front that I haven't read this book. In spite of this I have a few issues I'd like to raise. First of all, according to Amazon's information, the book was published 11/13/2013. Today is 1/1/2014. A little more than a month and a half has gone by since the book was published and I can't find it anywhere, and I've made a lengthy search of the web. Secondly, I used the Amazon page to read the first few pages and it's all good general information that can be gotten in any search of the SEALs. Again, just the first few pages......not enough to talk about in detail. Thirdly, I've searched the web for information for author Jack Calico and found nothing. What I did find was food for thought, though. There is another book about SEAL mindset on Amazon by a Lars Draeger. I immediately noticed that it was interesting that his last name was the same as the rebreather device that the SEALs use. It could be a funny pseudonym that means nothing, or it could be a hint that this guy wasn't a SEAL and simply "harvested" his data from outside sources. In IRON WILL, we find the author's name to be Jack Calico. Maybe he was or is a SEAL. Or, maybe it's a funny pseudonym taken from Capt. John "Calico Jack" Rackham, famous pirate that was hanged by the British so long ago. I honestly don't know.

For a book to become out of print in just over a month, one of two things had to have happened. Either very few copies were printed in expectation of a less than enthusiastic reception, or there was a huge clamor over the book that motivated a rush on it. Or, there's always the devious possibility that the entire picture here was a "dramatization" in order to use any means, ethical or not, to drum up sales. It's more than strange when I can't find a book by looking at the web sites, both used and new, that are covered on internet searches. Were talking all the sites that are available in the U.S., Canada, and the UK. In almost 20 years of searching for books I've never encountered this before. It makes me just a bit suspicious of the entire scenario.

My wife just pointed out one more possibility that exists that I overlooked. She points out that person or persons unknown might have bought out the entire print run because within this book exists information that someone doesn't want made available to the public. How about it? Those of you that have read it; does it seem to contain anything that would threaten anyone in any way?

In spite of what I've mentioned I would still like to read it. I'm too curious now not to.

Great Book

I wish I had bought this book before I did my training! This book really helps you to understand what it takes to succeed in the military. Although I was physically prepared to do all the training, I was not as prepared mentally as I would have liked and if I had this book before I joined the Navy I know it would have helped. Great tips not only for the military life but for life outside the military as well.

I love these books and am glad I was able to find this. The condition and price were very good, but I wish they'd have disclosed that the poster wasn't with the book, as I was really looking forward to it being included! Otherwise though I'm happy with my purchase.

the BASE of fear street - how it all started

this book is awesomely awesome!! Its truly amazingly written, has so much feeling and not to mention the whole fear family! wow you read every single word as if you're living the story with them, you get sad for them and you get happy when things turn for the best for them. Really, sometimes I feel as if I know all the characters in the story, as if they're really living with me. The three books are all so interconnecting that you'll find yourself remembering what each one did and said even if it was ten years back or something.
The main and most important note to describe it is that this is the BASE story of the fears. It describes how all the hate and revenge started in the first place, you absolutely MUST read this before starting your fear saga collection.
this is such a heaven sent gift :D I love it, its my favorite book so far!! I recommend it more than anything! you're gonna miss half your own life if ya didnt get it ;)

the best R. L. Stine saga ever!!!!!

I loved this book from 6 years ago i havent read it since but i know what its about. The Fier family and the Goode family have it in for each other and the mysterious murders don't even start there.. there are deep dark secrets from hundreds of years before that slowly become unraveled and also become regreted. This is the best Fear Street novel i've ever read and i dont mind reding it over & over.I just can't believe how so many spirits can take over an entire family's lives!!!!!The book is really creepy, & you can sometimes feel like you're there wanting to tell a person to do the right thing.I read it so long ago, & I remember faint details & names but i do recall the strong intensity of the book that didn't let me put it down for days until i finished. I was only eleven but i'm seventen now, and i really have to buy this book again!!!!!!!

Some of the best ocean writing ever

This is a terrific book. The reviewers who complained about the history and the overly- descriptive prose are really just reflecting the mind-set they brought to the book, because he does both of those well. I mean, that's the book he set out to write. Also, there is not a story here - rather it is a collection of essays, like that from a journal. Approach this for what it is: a bang-on personal report about what it's like to live a surfer's life revolving around the beach, wind, swells and tides. It's extremely accurate.

Not just for surfers, in fact, probably not for surfers

I can't swim, not really anyway. I can doggy paddle, I can float for a little while, I can even go from one side of a pool to the other if I have to (width not length). But after a couple minutes in the water I start to feel this weight on my chest, like the pressure of the entire ocean is pushing on me. Out of breath, I panic and realize the enormity of what surrounds me, the depth beneath me and the power that moves me. Reading Daniel Duane's "Caught Inside: A Surfer's Year on the California Coast" made me feel that way too, minus the panic. Mixing equal parts memoir, trail guide and history lesson Duane concocts a recipe that might not be for everyone and yet for those who have a taste for such things, what he has written will leave you changed. It's about surfing but it's really about being alive and noticing the world around you. It's about understanding the world as both science and art. It's about leaving home and finding something more.
If you're looking for cover to cover eloquence in prose it isn't here. If you're looking for a pure surf story it isn't here either. I think that what we have in this book is an honest reflection of a year from a guy that's read some books and seen some movies, a guy who can think about masturbating and physics and pop culture and relationships. The book is full of quietly poignant moments about things like tide pools or teenagers staring at a bottle of beer and if that makes Duane a "wanker" like one fellow Amazon reviewer suggested, I think we should all strive to be wankers too.
Anyway, it's been 5 years since I read this book last and yet I find myself thinking about it even now. As one person said to the author about the setting of the sun, it's just not the kind of thing you can look at once and say, "huh, I get it."

One of the best surfing books ever written

How did it happen? Sure, I thought the sport was cool. Yes, I wanted to get good at it. But how did it take over? And why am I 30 years old and only working part-time just so I can go to the beach everyday? These are questions that many surfers find themselves asking at one time or another. Daniel Duane does more than answer them in Caught Inside. He does so with the impeccable observations of a poet and nature-writer. Perhaps I'm biased because Dan happens to be writing about my favorite stretch of coastline in California - the one between Santa Cruz and San Francisco - but I think Caught Inside is one of the best surfing books ever written. He certainly inspired me to write Saltwater Buddha: A Surfer's Quest to Find Zen on the Sea.

Not worth any price.

I'm sorry but this was just beyond frustrating. You invest in 4 books in a series over months if not years of publication dates and this is the ending that we get. This isn't "artsy" or whatever the author was going for, it was annoying and a waste of time.

Mild spoilers ahead:

If we wanted to see the story come full circle with the world ending up in actually a worse position than before we could have skipped 3.75 books and just said "hey, nothing you read actually matters".

A Book without and ending

I see the drive in the modern writer to write a story that is different. A story with something to make it stand out. But this... this is just a story without an end. Don't waste your time reading this well written, well imagined story because it's biggest failing is its ending and you will be as angry as I was. Drivel.

The ending negated a great series

I loved this series up until the last 50 pages. It wasn't just the plot twist, but the manner in which the twist turn key elements of the series into a gimmick. There was also a lack of resolution. Good over evil or not - it was disappointing not to have some epilogue to help us understand how the decision turns out.

Poor tool to learn from initially, but good reference later.

This book was too difficult to understand when used for a lower division class. The authors write as if you already know linear algebra, differential equations and vector calculus in the first semester, although these classes are not prerequisates to take the courses that this book covers (Intro physics 1-3). The authors include a math toolbox in almost every chapter of the book, which is useless if you haven't seen the math before. It seems as if the authors think that you can understand this stuff by osmosis. If the authors took the time to recall how they felt when they were students and how they learned, I think that this book would be better. I also feel that the seemingly Feinmann style is okay, but other avenues of solving problems could have been explored, as not everyone is a visual learner. In the preface for this book, they should raise the math prerequisates, or learn how to explain things in a more elementary manner. Tipler, Douglas Giancoli and Halliday & Resnik do a better job of explaining the concepts to novice physics students. In short, I think that this book is good to refer to as an upper division student, but is not indicated for a new physics student.

a fundamentally solid book

I've been working with this book for three semesters now, and I feel it's strong, specifically in that:
1. The authors recognize that many beginning students need problem solving strategies; they supply a good method and are consistent with its use.
2. The book makes it abundantly clear what the big ideas are going into (and coming out of) each chapter. This was a very helpful study tool.
3. Their is surprisingly little "hand-waving" in this book, which I think is special for an introductory book on physics.
4. The problems have a _wide_ range of difficulty levels, and there are a lot of them.
5. The book covers a terrific amount of material, including basic mechanics, waves, optics, thermodynamics, and E&M. There's a short section on special relativity and other modern physics too, which is a nice appetite-whetter for students who will continue on.
This book can be very useful, but the organizational structure might at first seem a little opaque. After some getting used to, I have found the book a great resource. I would definitely recommend it for an introductory sequence at almost any school. I think the book might fit in best at more rigorous institutions, because it doesn't really pull many punches in the early chapters (though it does a good job making challenging material digestible). A good instructor could effectively use it at any institution, though--it's written to be understood.
One side comment regarding other reviews: The intro physics courses at SF State (where some of the reviewers used this book, including me) are unfortunately out of sequence, with students taking intro E&M with as little as one semester of calculus under their belts. This is obviously a big problem and I think some criticism has been leveled at the book (unfairly) because of it.

Excellent intro text but users need some math maturity

I've used this book for the 3-semester intro to physics sequence taught at San Francisco State and have been thoroughly pleased with it. Basic principles and key concepts are heavily emphasized. The authors tend to de-emphasize memorizing derived formulae (which leads to plug-and-chug problem solving) and focuses on breaking down a problem into its basic elements, which is in my opinion the best way to approach problems in physics. Some might find the math a bit rigorous for introductory physics but it's the same math as in Giancoli or Tipler which is just calculus (some differential equations is used later in the text but so does the others). This is not a "learn by example" text, since the examples tend to emphasize additional elements of the concepts (usually by showing some of the math techniques) but the text does show well thought out outlines to solving problems. It really has given me an excellent foundation in physics.
