Hilarious.

HILARIOUS. Just as good and even better than her first book. If you want a read that will keep you up past a respectable hour laughing, READ THIS BOOK!
I tried to preorder but my inept self didn't realize my credit card listed was years expired.
Also, a side note. I was sad the first reviews were bad because I was excited to read it. Soooo I stalked, no shame...the individual that wrote horrible reviews about this book also spent their week reviewing....Placemats. Tablecloths. Bug spray. ONLY my dead grandmother would have found those reviews helpful.

Hysterical and Honest View of Motherhood

If you don't know who Jenny Mollen is you're missing out- granted I've never read her first book and I didn't know she existed until about six months ago when I stumbled upon her page on Instagram- I love this book!

She's the only person brave (or crazy) enough to write down what we all think in our heads. Her humor and view of life is along the lines of Chelsea Handler, Lena Dunham, or even Jim Gaffigan- it's bold, honest, and totally relatable. No, I don't own a Birkin (or have a fake bag guy lol) and I definitely could have used a nanny/nurse for my first and second child but despite the lifestyle and celebrity status that most of us aren't privy to she's still Sid's mom and Jason's wife and totally winging it like the rest of us. If you aren't then you're either a) lying or b) you came out of the womb Benjamin Button style and were probably doing your parent's taxes at the age of three and you wouldn't appreciate the honesty in this book.

It's easy to read, covers a variety of life's ups and downs, and made me laugh out loud so often my husband banished me from the couch while reading it because I was disturbing his game. Is it an instant literary classic with copious amounts of symbolism, syntax, and the answers to all of life's great mysteries? No, but is it hysterical and a great break to read while I'm nursing my newborn and my toddler is drawing on every surface possible with a black crayon- yes!

If you're a mom or about to be a mom I'd add this to the short list and get ready to laugh.

Who wouldn't want to hang out with Jenny?

I have read both of Jenny Mollen's books and have enjoyed them both very much. I love reading books written by real people, telling real stories. And, if I can laugh while I'm at it, it's a bonus. She really just says what all of us women feel, but mostly sound ridiculous if we say it out loud. Thank you for sharing your stories.

About the Author

ORSON SCOTT CARD is best known for his science fiction novel Ender's Game and it's many sequels that expand the Ender Universe into the far future and the near past. Those books are organized into the Ender Quintet, the five books that chronicle the life of Ender Wiggin; the Shadow Series, that follows on the novel Ender's Shadow and are set on Earth; and the Formic Wars series, written with co-author Aaron Johnston, that tells of the terrible first contact between humans and the alien "Buggers". Card has been a working writer since the 1970s. Beginning with dozens of plays and musical comedies produced in the 1960s and 70s, Card's first published fiction appeared in 1977 -- the short story "Gert Fram" in the July issue of The Ensign, and the novelet version of "Ender's Game" in the August issue of Analog.
The novel-length version of Ender's Game, published in 1984 and continuously in print since then, became the basis of the 2013 film, starring Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Hailee Steinfeld, Viola Davis, and Abigail Breslin.
Card was born in Washington state, and grew up in California, Arizona, and Utah. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Brazil in the early 1970s. Besides his writing, he runs occasional writers' workshops and directs plays. He frequently teaches writing and literature courses at Southern Virginia University.

He is the author many sf and fantasy novels, including the American frontier fantasy series "The Tales of Alvin Maker" (beginning with Seventh Son), There are also stand-alone science fiction and fantasy novels like Pastwatch and Hart's Hope. He has collaborated with his daughter Emily Card on a manga series, Laddertop. He has also written contemporary thrillers like Empire and historical novels like the monumental Saints and the religious novels Sarah and Rachel and Leah. Card's recent work includes the Mithermages books (Lost Gate, Gate Thief), contemporary magical fantasy for readers both young and old.

Just sort of seems like OSC phoned this one in, here and there you get some good writing but mostly it struck me as cheap. Some of the sections mention network security were just stupid, "...they have the best firewalls, but we hacked them in seconds while in free fall during a parachute jump using a eye blinking interface." wtf? The depictions of scientists and engineers were so far off the mark as to make me put the book down and shake my head (I am an engineer). We are not two dimensional and can deal with more than black&white problems also many of us can interact with people professionally and even effectively manage them. In many places OSC tries to insert some Newtonian physics but this universally fails and reveals that he really does not have a clue, speed and acceleration are different things. I could go on but you get the point.

I know this review does not really matter and anyone who has read the other books will read this one too as you should, just keep your expectations low. Or maybe read this one in graphic novel form.

Really?

I am so very disappointed... I can't believe Card even read this book, let alone wrote it.

The story is moderately interesting, and the characters are enough to keep you going. However the book displays complete ignorance of the most basic points about physics, gravity, and space flight. (spoilers ahead)

What the heck does it mean to come to a "full stop" in space?
How does it matter how fast you're going when you dock, as long as you're matching velocity?
How can you travel from the Kuiper belt to the Moon in 8 months? At the stated velocity (100,000 mph) it's a 5 year trip. Don't you have Google?
So many many others..

By the way, if you're the mindless appendage of a multi-body organism, why do you snarl in hatred? Do our fingers have expressions? And oh yes, how does a human know that expression is hate?

I am a huge fan of Card's work, but come on, this time nobody even tried. It's OK to stretch the boundaries of science when you write science fiction, but you need to at least consider the actual facts too.

Lastly, Card's work is lyrical and a beautiful read, full of social commentary. This is just a rather poorly written space opera, not much different than the "Bug Eyed Monster" genre of the 1940's. I can't believe Card wrote this; I suspect Mr. Johnson spent most of the time at the keyboard. But Card should have exerted a little editorial control. His name's on the book, and that should be a promise to the reader. Promise not kept!

Written for a comic book series

Ender's Game is still one of my top 5 books of all time. While I didn't like the followup novels as much, I could still appreciate how well they were written, even if they didn't appeal as much to my reading tastes. Earth Unaware, however, is complete drivel. I have no idea what Card was thinking when he released this, but I should have recognized the warning sign when I saw that it was co-authored. It's not even really a novel, but rather a series of short stories that loosely tie together with a couple of utterly pointless cameo appearances by characters which will play a role later in the Formic wars.

Sadly, it all starts to make sense when you read the Afterward in the book -- this was never originally intended to be a novel. It was backstory that Card created for Ender's Game. Back in 2009 Marvel Comics made several successful runs of comics based on Ender's Game and the Ender universe. This travesty of a novel is the result of Marvel wanting to do a new series with new characters, but still set in the Ender universe. It was created specifically to flesh out the story so Marvel can create a comic book series.

The Illustrated Tibetan Book of the Dead

Many people engaged in serious spiritual practice have suceeded in indefinitely putting off a "confrontation" with the Tibetan Book of the Dead. After all it is very complex, loaded with esoteric Tibetan Buddhist teachings, and the subject is so -- well, shall we say not a light entertainment accompanied by an immediate warm glow of satisfaction.
Now there is no reason to put it off any longer! The beautifully produced new Illustrated Tibetan Book of the Dead(a new translation with commentary) by Stephen Hodge with Martin Boord fills a void with great success.
First the book is physically beautiful with absolutely splendid color photographs of the Tibetan people, colorful religious celebrations and ceremonies and the awesome scenery of this spectacular country.
Reading, absorbing and responding to this book is very much like participating in a several day retreat. The retreat is conducted by someone who really understands his topic. The text of the book is reduced in size from the original, eliminating much of the more obscure material and examples, but the central, essential elements are all here.
Those central elements, very well introduced, are presented in a fine new translation and accompanied by very helpful explanatory material by Stephen Hodge. The first time visitor to this esoteric spiritual classic can therefore come away from a several day "retreat" of reading feeling well satisfied that the book has been opened for him/her and explicated by a master.
As our life is truly for the sake of dying into an eternity of awareness and bliss, and since we can in fact become familiar with the process of dying through meditative reading and understanding of this book -- and since a major point of the book is to show how easy it is to be so unfamilar with the open doors to eternal bliss that we can move right past them out of ignorance, why not stop now and take the time to study and learn the lesson of lessons.
Whether a reader of this book will wish to follow it up by going to a complete text of the Tibetan Book of the Dead is of course an individual decision based on how satisfied one is with the book discussed here. Certainly, this superlatively planned, written and produced book is l00% more helpful and satisfying than never bothering with the Book Of The Dead at all. And it is probably equal to the task of satisfying most readers completely.

Incredibly Helpful

I would give this book 10 stars if I could! I suffered a major heart attack in 1989 at the age of 41. Shortly after that I came across this book purely by accident. It was very believable. Purely on an act of faith (since I was also suffering from a severe, sometimes bleeding, ulcer) I went to health food store and bought cayenne capsules. I took them. Within three days my 10 year old ulcer was completely healed...and since my original heart attack, have been symptom-free of coronary heart disease to this day. I am now 52.
I credit this book and the healing properties of cayenne for saving my life. In fact, I use the word cayenne in my email address as well as naming my commodity trading company after the red pepper...just so people ask me why, and I get the chance to recommend the book and cayenne. Simply amazing...

HE WASN'T LYIN': HE WASN'T DYIN', THANKS TO CAYENNE!

Shortly after moving to Phoenix in 1995, I took a job in a health food store. I had not been there long when one day a gentleman approached and asked if we carried GRANULAR LECITHIN. I took him back to the refrigerated section, and in the course of conversation, he happened to mention being (as I recall) 80 years old. Well, I almost fell over! Never in my life had I met a person who looked so much younger than their age! Many people have told me that I look considerably younger than 45 (I always respond that I'm pickled from the years I spent LIQUIDATED on "Mad Dog" 20/20, Night Train, Thunderbird and other fine wines), but this guy was in a league by himself!

I called the assistant manager over and told her to guess his age. Like me, she nearly hit the floor upon learning that her estimate of 50 was 30 years shy of the truth. I wondered if it was genetic, but he said that neither his parents nor his siblings exhibited the same trait. He attributed it to LECITHIN, which was the only dietary supplement he had been using religiously for many, many years.

Not long after, I purchased Dick Quinn's book, 'LEFT FOR DEAD' which includes a chapter on Lecithin, and explains the 12-Day Flush. Lecithin is a type of water-soluble fat derived from eggs and soybeans. Experts say the choline in Lecithin liquifies cholesterol and dissolves deposits. Check the ingredients of ANY candy containing chocolate and you'll find Lecithin listed. Without Lecithin, the fat would separate from the cocoa, and coagulate. The Lecithin keeps it all in a smooth, liquified state. It does the same thing in your bloodstream, preventing plaque buildup in the arteries which results in heart attacks and strokes. While the 12-Day Flush (3 heaping tablespoons of granular Lecithin taken once a day for 12 days) may have a mild laxative effect on some people, it is actually designed to clear clogged ARTERIES.

In 2002, my Mom suffered a small stroke. Afterwards, I remembered what I had learned in 'LEFT FOR DEAD', and - unbeknownst to her doctor - two weeks before a scheduled test to determine the degree of blockage in her carotid arteries, I convinced my Mom to go on the 12-Day Flush as an experiment. When the doctor got the test results, she was quite surprised to find that the blood flow through my Mom's arteries was similar to what she sometimes finds in 17-year-olds, and she was at a loss to explain how the stroke had occurred in the first place. Because we didn't have a test done PRIOR to the Flush, I can't unequivocally prove that the Lecithin was responsible for the unexpected results. You can draw your own conclusions.

In 1992, Dick Quinn wrote, "I had a double coronary bypass about 14 years ago - four times longer than a bypass is supposed to last. The comedian Jackie Gleason had his first bypass the day I had mine. He subsequently had three more. Then he died...According to 'modern medicine', I should be dead now, but I am very much alive, thanks entirely to 'ancient medicine.' My bypass was actually a failure from the very first. It closed within a week. Herbs reopened my arteries and saved my life...If I die tomorrow, that's OK. I'm already a winner, years ahead of the game." Well, Mr. Quinn lived another 3 years, and when he did die, it wasn't from heart failure, but from an entirely unrelated ailment that had been diagnosed 17 years earlier.

If you want to regain or maintain your good health, I strongly recommend that you read his book, 'LEFT FOR DEAD.' Also read 'WORLD WITHOUT CANCER' by G. Edward Griffin; 'ALIVE AND WELL' by Dr. Philip Binzel, Jr.; and 'YOUR BODY'S MANY CRIES FOR WATER' by Dr. F. Batmanghelidj.

If you want to preserve your youthful appearance, I recommend imbibing copious amounts of cheap wine, gin, sake, and suds. But substitute Lecithin if you want to preserve your liver, too!

Enlightening, sobering and challenging!

This title caught my eye while on a search for another book called "The Cure For All Cancers", an equally challenging book. Especially to the medical profession. I am pleased that the authors of both of these books were willing to speak out in regard to the underlying drive in much of our medical world.
Having had a heart problem myself, but not to the point of open heart surgery and all its dangers, (I only had angioplasty which I will never risk again)the book really hit home.
My cardiologist has urged me to "let him go back in and check", but I think you know my answer. I run an appraisal business and am constantly having to provide estimates for different types of repairs. Once you get used to the format you can provide an estimate that is adjusted to your area and up to date. The CD allows to print or save your estimates so that you may incorporate them into various reports. I would like to see a section similar to RS Means or Swift as for overall construction in the Cost Method is not necessary to give such a detailed cost, a general cost per house category/class and location would be easier.

But what do they really mean? In this engrossing volume, Laurel Ulrich goes far beyond the slogan she inadvertently created and explores what it means to make history.

Her volume ranges over centuries and cultures, from the fifteenth-century writer Christine de Pizan, who imagined a world in which women achieved power and influence, to the writings of nineteenth-century suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton and twentieth-century novelist Virginia Woolf. Ulrich updates de Pizan’s Amazons with stories about women warriors from other times and places. She contrasts Woolf’s imagined story about Shakespeare’s sister with biographies of actual women who were Shakespeare’s contemporaries. She turns Stanton’s encounter with a runaway slave upside down, asking how the story would change if the slave rather than the white suffragist were at the center. She uses daybook illustrations to look at women who weren’t trying to make history, but did. Throughout, she shows how the feminist wave of the 1970s created a generation of historians who by challenging traditional accounts of both men’s and women’s histories stimulated more vibrant and better-documented accounts of the past.

In 1976, graduate student Ulrich asserted in an obscure scholarly article that well-behaved women seldom make history. But Ulrich, now at Harvard, made history, winning the Pulitzer and the Bancroft Prizes for A Midwife's Tale—and her slogan did, too: it began popping up on T-shirts, greeting cards and buttons. Why the appeal, Ulrich wondered? And what makes a woman qualify as well-behaved or rebellious? Several chapters of this accessible and beautifully written study are brilliant. In one, Ulrich follows the lead of Virginia Woolf (who invented an ill-fated fictional sister of Shakespeare) by digging into what we know—and don't know—about the women in the Bard's family. In another, she offers a piercing analysis of four 19th-century Harriets—ex-slaves Tubman, Jacobs and Powell, and novelist Stowe—to uncover the interplay of race and gender in questions of liberation. And in a third, richly illustrated chapter, she utilizes a medieval book of days as a window into women's labor through the ages. If other chapters, such as a wide-ranging exploration of the Amazon myth and a rumination on second-wave feminism, don't cohere as tightly or showcase Ulrich's strengths as an extraordinary interpreter of ordinary records, this can be forgiven in a work that is so often sharp and insightful. 26 illus. This is a great book! I really like this author and her ...

This is a great book! I really like this author and her perspective. I gave this book to a high school senior going through some difficult personal situations in her life. She enjoyed the stories about the challenges these women faced and what they did to address the issues. She felt inspired. I would recommend this to everyone.

Laughed and learned a lot

This never felt like a high school history book but I think it SHOULD be one! I loved it and have recommended it to many women. It jumps across time, across cultures and across disciplines but isn't choppy. It steadily frames just how amazing the history of womenkind is.

Better than the cover

The best feature of this book is the wide range of relatively unknown women whose stories are told. The book is very well researched, with vivid storytelling. A must read -- even a textbook -- as an introduction to women's studies at the college level.
