Epic ground breaking study

It has been over 30 years since this book was published and it has to be said that this is the definitive book on Hitler's intelligence services but that it also provides lessons for all intelligence services.As such,I think that this book is not only a good read for historians,spy and military buffs but also for politicians ,military leaders and spy chiefs on the role,limitations and strengths of intelligence services during war.The author shows how Hitler's mentality sabotaged the work of the Intelligence services.In other words,this book is a guide on what not to do in the management of a spy service.
Mr KAhn does a good job in detailing the successes of Hitler's apparat.Here we learn that there was a codebreaking service (b-dienst),that actually broke british codes for some time,that there was a similar code breaking operation against an American that helped Rommel in his North Africa .We are also given various examples of the skill of the Nazi intelligence services:its communication intelligence departments performed a great job especially on the eastern front;it had excellent analysts (especially the military economists) and it possessed excellent interragtors and tactical intelligence patrols.They even ran a spy in the British embassy in Istanbul.
As impressive as these successes were ,they were overshadowed by the list of failures.The nazis were duped by the British XX committee in the Western Front and by a Soviet agent on the Eastern front.The book details how this agent Max fed the Nazis information about a conference where Stalin discussed plans for the winter of 1942 leaving out crucial details such as the planned Stalingrad offensive.This contributed to the disaster that unfolded for the sixth army in a similar manner that the british fooled the nazis into thinking that the Normandy operation was a feint that accidentally turned into a success.We also learn of the 3 major nazi mistakes in intelligence:the failure to estimate Soviet strength correctly,the failure to guess where the North Africa landings would take place and the failure to guess the true intention of the Normandy landing.
Kahn lists 5 reasons for the Nazi failure :arrogance,authoritarianism ,aggression ,anti-semitism and the struggle between the spooks and the military staffs.Whilst I agree with these statements I find that he should have expanded the first two to state politically correct thinking and rivalry amongst different agencies.My reasoning ?If you look at a lot of the Intelligence failures over the years:the failure by Stalin to accept that Hitler was going to invade the USSR in spite of massive evidence to the contrary,the failure by the israelis to see the Yom kippur war coming ,the 9-11 failure ,the failures in the iraq war,you will see that a lot of the failure resulted from the fact that leaders failed to see reality because of their thinking which was mostly based on some idiotic ideology and that rivalries and duplication of effort also played a role.This should be a lesson for all politicians .Leave intelligence gathering and analysis in the hands of professional spooks and trust their judgements rather than influence them

Probably the only definitive coverage of German intelligence in WWII

Don't make the mistake of thinking that this book is full of exciting spy stories. There are a couple of anecdotes about the various spies that the Nazi's sent into enemy territory, but the book actually is an exhaustive documention of the entire Nazi intelligence apparatus during WWII. I know of no other source that so painstakingly details the hierarchy, personalities, structure and successes and failures of that apparatus. Flicke's "War Secrets in the Ether" is the only other book that I know that even attempts to document the Nazi successes or failures in the intelligence field, but it falls far short of Kahn's detailed work. Especially interesting is the contrast that Kahn makes with Allied intelligence, and how rivalries and jealousies essentially paralyzed the Germans, but only hindered the Allies, who grudgingly came to accept the necessity of interservice cooperation. The book can be dry in some areas, but that's the price you pay for such a thorough treatment.

Historical Value of "Hitler's Spies"

When the generals and admirals of World War II were starting to die off, a PhD candidate thought to interview the surviving specimens before their wisdom and experience went completely to the grave. His thesis material was so riveting that his professors recommended he render the topic into a popularly-oriented book format. Voila! This book. It shows reality is more fascinating and unbelievable than anything Hollywood can dream up.

A Pleasurable Mix of the Architectural and the Literary

Victoria Rosner's book is a pleasure to read. She discusses the issues of Edwardian English social relations going back and forth between novels of the time that referred to architectural changes from the rigid compartmentalization by sex and class to a more open way of defining space and architecture that inspired or constrained these writers. In five chapters--Kitchen Table Modernism,Frames, Thresholds, Studies, Interiors--she draws on diverse writers, from Virginia Wool and Oscar Wilde to Arthur Conan Doyle and Doris Lessing, to Gaston Bachelard and Walter Benjamin. An enjoyable inter-disciplinary read.

The recipes included with the diet book were good but not great

I started the 10-Day Detox diet about five days ago. The recipes included with the diet book were good but not great. I was worried that I wouldn't be able to stick with the plan because I wasn't loving the food. Lucky for me, 3 days in, Dr. Hyman released this cookbook. I ordered it on Sunday and it came on Tuesday (Thanks to Amazon Prime)! It is FABULOUS! This cookbook has kept me on the diet, without feeling like I am giving up anything. The recipes are amazing. My husband is doing the diet with me, and he keeps asking me, "Is this really allowed on the diet?" because the food is so rich and delicious. I agree with some reviewers, that it does take a moderate amount of time to make the recipes and shop for the ingredients (which are a bit expensive), but it is well worth the time and money because the food is so good. I love to cook and have found the recipes in this book very fun to make, and not too difficult.

Some of the recipes I have tried are: Filet Mignon with Garlic Sauce and Roasted Tomatoes, Southwestern Turkey Chili, Stuffed Compari Tomatoes (ahhhmazing), Vegetable Hash with Fried Eggs, Blueberry Smoothie, and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head. As I stated before, the recipes have helped me to stick with the 10 day diet and I have lost 5 pounds in 5 days! I plan to continue with the diet after the 10 days are up, which will be so easy with the recipes provided in this cookbook. THANK YOU, Dr. Mark Hyman!

Delicious Food to Promote Your Health

Dr. Hyman and the amazing team has hit it out of the park once again. This cookbook is fantastic. I have had the distinct pleasure of receiving an early copy of this book and have cooked my way through a large portion of it. There has, literally, not been one disappointing recipe.

As a plant based eater I was thrilled with the Vegetarian and Vegan section of the book and I also modified recipes found in other sections, such as the Broccoli Rabe with Italian Sausage and the Chili-Spiced Turkey Meatloaf with Roasted Carrot Salad.

No modifications were necessary when entertaining or serving the meat lovers in my family. One of these particular meals began with an appetizer of julienned vegetables, Spicy Roasted Pepper and Walnut Dip, and Bell Pepper Mini Quiches followed by Tomato-Basil Soup with Shrimp, Miso Marinated Cod with Fresh Basil and Bok Choy, Spicy Garlic Eggplant and an incredible dessert of Cinnamon and Cayenne Roasted Mixed Nuts with fresh fruit.

In addition to all of the wonderful recipes you will also find tips on healthy living, pointers on the 10 Day Detox Diet and great information on losing weight, living a life free of inflammation, breaking food addictions and boosting your energy.

Never felt better!

I bought the 10-Day Detox book and then ordered this cookbook after we decided to just stay on the diet. I have suffered from joint pain, bloating, swelling and just plain feeling like crap for several years now. I've been through the Western medicine ringer, if you will. Fed up, I started looking into Ayurveda and stumbled upon Dr. Hyman's newsletter and then decided to do the 10-Day Detox Diet. I made everyone in the house follow it since I figured I'm the household cook and it would make my life easier if everyone was on it together. For the first time in 7 years I lost weight (I've done several cleanses and would only lose 3-4 lbs and those pounds that came right back). We have been on the detox diet for nearly 5 weeks now and I've lost 15 lbs and my husband has lost 18 lbs. But the most important thing is that by the 6th day I realized my joint pain was almost entirely gone (I had been living a life of pain 24/7). My "lupus" symptoms all but disappeared making me question the diagnosis altogether. This diet has been a game-changer for me. I suspected I had a gluten sensitivity, but it turned out to be far worse than I thought and my husband has a severe dairy intolerance, both of these were identifiable as a result of the 10-day detox and then reintroducing food items one at a time. When I introduced a small amount of gluten back into my diet I became quite ill and my knees and hands began to hurt almost instantly. This diet is the best medicine I've ever taken and we have decided to make this our new "life diet." I am a total foodie and a very creative cook so I've taken some liberties with the recipes that have taken them to an all new level. I post the meals on our FB page and my friends and family keep asking for the recipes. While it is challenging to maintain the diet, especially as two professional people who have demanding jobs, once you figure out what you can and can't have and learn the new recipes it gets easier. Tip: Make big dinners so you have leftovers for lunch the next day, it will save a ton of time! I highly recommend this diet to anyone, it just makes you feel better overall. If you are struggling with health issues I strongly encourage you to give it a try, it has changed our lives.

NOT WORTH THE PAPER ITS PRINTED ON

This is a terrible buy, not even worth the paper it is printed on. Everything is pixelated and blurry and the final product isn't even shown in the end. It doesn't teach you how to draw eyes or faces, only four different characters that look terrible! Might I also point out it was PRINTED THREE DAYS BEFORE IT ARRIVED?? This "big" book is a lie and does not fit the description at all. Don't waste your money!

sereously this book is sooooooooo not wat i expected i thought it would have a nice and clean look on how to draw a manga male but it just shows you crap, to my understanding the pictures dosent even have a nice defined crisp look to them they are more like bluring and crappy drawings they dont even show you how to draw the nice character on the cover so not pleased not at all
