Older King's writing is inflated and undisciplined with frequent unnecessary author intrusions
By Hill Young J. Lam
EDIT: I forgive everything. The ending was so spectacular, so real, so poignant to me I am reeling from it. I forgive all the irritations I've mentioned - this series is the best reading experience I've ever undertaken in my life.

I'm a die-hard Stephen King fan. I'm the Constant Reader, the kind that would read the King's laundry list. I read all of his books many times, usually within days of release, except the Dark Tower. I thought it would be a Western-gun-type story and wasn't interested, but I finally got into it a month ago and I marveled at how I could possibly miss it - it truly is his greatest work, with a kind on-the-edge thrilling pace and steaming plot you seldom see in his horror novels. I read all seven books continuously over the past few weeks, couldn't put it down, and getting more and more disappointed. You can see how young King and old King's writing differs so greatly in both plot and language. Young King is tightly disciplined, highly structured, no unnecessary and distracting insertions that's really about the writer's ego than of service to the story. By this final book, I caught myself rolling my eyes frequently at unnecessary author intrusions to the story and plot, which is getting weirder and weirder all the time, like a bad psychedelic trip. Even the way the characters speak to each other doesn't flow with the natural ease and seamless belief in his old books, with frequent author intrusions about what Eddie or Roland or whoever is like, e.g. "...we might as well look at him a bit more closely. We won't take long, for Pimli Prentiss isn't central to our tale of Roland..." - IS THIS NECESSARY? My good man, just tell the tale and leave the narrator out of it. Let your characters speak for themselves. By the end of Song of Susannah I could barely follow the narrative with real immersion (I skipped the entire series of journal logs by King at the end of the last book. What was that about? Totally unnecessary)

That said, it's still one awesome ride. I know how much work it is to write a good book. So despite all this, the merits outweighs the faults, and it's all worth it.

The Best book in The Dark Tower series
By Michael
With The Dark Tower movies beginning to take shape, it seems logical to assume there will be a resurgence of people wanting to see what these books are all about. I started Book 1 about 5 months ago and Roland's journey just ended for me (several minutes ago, in fact!). You're most likely going to read horrible reviews on here, how Stephen King dropped the ball and this book is a hopeless letdown. My personal opinion of the matter is this book is quite simply the best of the entire series. The pacing, revelations, surprises, and twists absolutely never let up. From traveling under Caste Discordia to having dinner with Dandelo, I was completely enthralled from beginning to end. The last 20 pages or so of the book are your call to make what you will of how everything wraps up. Personally, it isn't how I wanted the story to end, but that in no way devalues the absolutely brilliant 99.9% of it. This series is my adult "Harry Potter" series. I will cherish these stories and will be reading Roland's journey to the tower again for you ears to come.

Roland's quest for the Tower was a long one. Full of excitement, horror, sacrifice, love, darkness.. and light.
By Bryan Desmond
It's hard to review this book, because it's the end of the road. I've reached the clearing at the end of the path so to speak. I feel like I have to review the journey as a whole, and that's tough. It's been a hell of a ride. Before the Gunslinger I hadn't really picked up a long series like this in quite a while. In light of that, I decided to space the series out, and really make it last. That turned out to be an excellent decision on my part, because it made the journey that much longer, and that much sweeter. Roland's quest for the Tower was a long one. Full of excitement, horror, sacrifice, love, darkness.. and light. And I think Stephen King wrapped up the ending perfectly. I loved it. I couldn't rate The Dark Tower anything less than five stars after finishing it. Full-body chills were achieved and a good portion of time was spent staring at the wall in front of me. It honestly made me want to crack open the Gunslinger and take the trip again.

I'm sure that someday I will.

He won't let anyone close. Two rules: No kissing. No falling in love. The rules are to protect himself. He won't talk about why. Hunter Carlisle is looking for a new admin, and he chose me. Filthy rich and sinfully handsome, he's the bachelor everyone wants. But this job isn't just getting him coffee. He wants complete control. Intimately. My bank account is nearly empty and rent is due in a week. I need the money, but I don't know if I can follow his rules. I don't know if I can separate duty, from pleasure. My only defense is saying no, but everything in my body wants to say yes....

Good start to a new series but hoping for a stronger heroine in the next book...
By ReadingismyEscape
I've waiting a few days after finishing the book before writing this review. To be truthful I'm not sure exactly how I feel about this book - I like it but then I don't like it.

Let me start with our Hero - Hunter. Off the bat I didn't really like him. He appeared to operate in a very clinical manner - cold and uncaring. He had the whole Christian Grey feel going....esp with the personal contract (NO BDSM though). I also didn't like the fact that he had a fiance (cheating is a huge NO NO for me) but still interacted with his assistants in the way that he did. It took time for me to warm up to him and even when I did I still thought he was an a**hole some times. Willow (KF) did a great job of showing us his growth through his relationship with Olivia and in the end I found that I could end up loving the guy.

Our Heroine - Olivia. Hmmm....I had a like/dislike relationship with her. I'm not sure I saw her as a strong character (Willow/KF's heroines are typically strong leads who can handle their own). On one hand I can understand Olivia's desire to fit in and want to be on equal footing with her friends BUT on the other hand I'm confused as to why she considers the people she spends time with friends. Kimberly I can understand but the others I'm not feeling. She needs more confidence in herself and needs to be happy as she is.. Also, I wish she would have put up more of a fight when it came to her initially falling into bed with Hunter and that she wouldn't have been so ga ga over him. She spoke a lot of big words but the second she was in his presence they all flew out the window. She did stand up to Hunter at times but I still feel she compromised more than what she should.

Overall, I did like how Hunter and Olivia came together. We saw some real growth in Hunter and I'm hoping for some in Olivia in the next book. I like my H/h to be on equal ground and I don't feel like we got that in this book. YES, Olivia did have some power over Hunter BUT I don't feel it was equal. However, the set up for the next book is looking like it will play to Olivia's technical strength. I need to see some more of Olivia's value. As for Hunter I'm hoping we'll see him grow more and possibly stand up to the powers that be in regards to the contract with his fiance. As I said above cheating is a big NO NO for me and I guess technically this book didn't involve cheating as Hunter and his fiance are not really together BUT she is still labeled as his fiance and I need that resolved.

I enjoyed Willow/KF's writing style and I did one click this book simply because of the author. If you are a fan of KF then I think you will like the book BUT you will probably have the same issues I did in reference to Olivia's lack of strength of character. I need her to kick some butt like Sasha did in the "Darkness" series. Ultimately this is a book I would recommend :-)

So good, can't wait for more!
By Moody
Hunter, a rich no nonsense businessman needs a new admin or assistant. He meets the unexpected with Olivia, she's not what he's use to in the least, he's not use to the word no. Olivia, young went to a great school, but she's not finding any work in the field which she studied, so she's open to most anything especially since the bills are stacking up. You will love this story, it's amazing, I breezed through the whole book in a day, it just kept me pulled in. I loved every word. I recommend all my friends read it. Amazing read. I can't wait for book 2..I'm left with a book hangover, I need more Hunter.

Naughty
By Casey Harris
I'm just going to say it, this whole thing is naughty. The concept, the story, the whole shebang. This is going to sound weird, but I love that the heroines name is Olivia. If you've followed the work of Willow Summers other personality (heh) K.F. Breene, then you'll understand what I'm going to say. She never writes a delicate, dainty female lead. They're strong, and take no crap, but they usually have strong names as well. Shanti, Sasha, hell, even Krista Marshall is the name of a woman who kicks butt. But Olivia? I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I feel like it's a delicate name, and Olivia is a survivor, not delicate, so I love that contradiction. I also like Hunter. I can't wait to get to know him better. You've read the synopsis, so I'm not going to repeat it. I can't wait to see how this plays out, and I can't wait to watch Hunter's character grow. This does end in a bit of a cliffy, but I hear it won't be too long between books. Can't wait for more!

The Middle of Everywhere: Helping Refugees Enter the American Community, by Mary Pipher

Over the past decade, Mary Pipher has been a great source of wisdom, helping us to better understand our family members. Now she connects us with the newest members of the American family--refugees. In cities all over the country, refugees arrive daily. Lost Boys from Sudan, survivors from Kosovo, families fleeing Afghanistan and Vietnam: they come with nothing but the desire to experience the American dream. Their endurance in the face of tragedy and their ability to hold on to the virtues of family, love, and joy are a lesson for Americans. Their stories will make you laugh and weep--and give you a deeper understanding of the wider world in which we live.
The Middle of Everywhere moves beyond the headlines into the homes of refugees from around the world. Working as a cultural broker, teacher, and therapist, Mary Pipher has once again opened our eyes--and our hearts--to those with whom we share the future.

Amazon.com Review
Though Lincoln, Nebraska, seems a strange gathering place for refugees from all corners of the globe, it is the setting for Mary Pipher's The Middle of Everywhere, an ardent, anecdotal, and at times moving study of some new arrivals to the United States. Pipher emphasizes the resiliency of the refugees--from Laos, Bosnia, Northern Iraq, Sudan, Afghanistan, and the former Soviet Union--whose homeland tales of death, privation, torture, and multi-pronged persecution vary only in the details. In America the refugees must learn a new language and pick their way among the temptations and wonders of a complex land. Does a Publishers Clearing House notice mean one is a millionaire? What is aluminum foil? Is an overdue library book a jailable offense? Pipher visits classrooms and homes and offers extended portraits of a female family of Kurds and a bewildered clan of Sudanese, as well as snapshots of many other refugees. She is a harsh critic of the Immigration and Naturalization Service and an advocate of "cultural brokers"--the social adjustment equivalent of practical nurses. --H. O'Billovich

From Publishers Weekly
"I saw my father and grandfather shot in our living room," says Anton, a Bosnian teen who now lives in Nebraska. His teachers see him as a potential suicide, and he struggles to make sense of being an American high school student. Profiling Anton and other refugees from around the world Russia, Croatia, Yemen, Hungary, Somalia, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone bestselling author Pipher (Reviving Ophelia), drawing upon anthropology, sociology and psychology, offers a deft, moving portrait of the complexity of American life. Pipher, a family therapist in Lincoln, Neb., where these immigrants all live, is interested in the effects of globalization how it affects people's relationships, their sense of place, their identities. She writes in rich, empathetic language and with a keen, observant eye for detail and nuance. Her relationships with her subjects range widely: she is a surrogate parent to a family of four children orphaned during the Sudanese civil war; to others she is "cultural broker," for instance, helping an Iraqi family understand the difference between what they see on television and the realities of everyday American life. As in Another Country, her book about aging parents, Pipher writes directly and movingly about the complications of people's lives in a constant culture clash but is mindful to place them in a clearly defined social and political setting. Noting that after September 11, "we are all refugees from what was once our America," Pipher's ambitious undertaking of combining personal stories with global politics is wonderfully realized. (Apr.)Forecast: Given Pipher's record and the increased attention by Americans to foreigners in our midst, this should sell handsomely.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-A psychologist turns her descriptive and analytic lens on her hometown of Lincoln, NE, and its recent experiences with war-scarred immigrants from Europe, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Much of Pipher's work and personal interactions with Bosnians, Kurds, Dinkas, Vietnamese, and others have been with people on the cusp of adolescence through young adulthood, an appealing range for their peers to read about here. The author recounts experiences in English Language Learner classrooms, with individuals referred to her for psychotherapy, and with refugees whom she and her husband have befriended so as to serve as "cultural brokers" in a strange new land requiring a winter wardrobe, regular school attendance, and job-interview skills. Pipher emphasizes the culturally specific norms she carries with her and deconstructs how these and the norms of the young people who have come from war zones in Sudan, after flight from Iraq, and years of exile in Germany and other circumstances offer everyone involved the opportunity to grow as human beings and become more fully engaged in the experiences of others. Student researchers, nascent psychologists, and native- and nonnative-born teens will find this is absorbing discussion material.

the world comes to your town
By Karen Sampson Hudson
Mary Pipher's "The Middle of Everywhere" is a marvelously wise book that encompasses the tales of people of many lands who come to Lincoln, Nebraska, and her personal story as a "cultural broker" who appreciates and respects them. The world has come to my town, also. Pipher writes, "Most of my friends were of European background. As I've made friends with people of Mideastern, Latino, African, and Southeast Asia backgrounds, I've changed a great deal. I've stopped seeing myself as a member of a majority culture. Instead, I see myself as a member of a world culture that flourishes in my hometown." That has been my experience exactly.
Especially interesting is her chapter on how American-style psychotherapy is not the method many of the refugee peoples use to heal from past traumas. She quotes a saying of her mother's: "There are three cures for all human pain and all involve salt--the salt of tears, the salt of sweat from hard work, and the salt of the great open seas." (She points out that, while once she interpreted the "seas" as an escape from family or memory, now she sees it as the beauty of the natural world.)
Pipher believes that young people adjusting to the American lifestyle should carefully choose to incorporate the best of their cultural heritage with the best of what America offers. (The pervasive media advertising and marketing, and all types of sleaze, for example, should be rejected. Family and community, shared meals, fun, love and laughter, should be cherished.) She celebrates the energy and the optimism of these newest Americans.
In a carefully reasoned discussion, she upholds the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights and firmly maintains we are not practicing cultural bias when we seek to implant these basic rights all over the world.
Hats off to Mary Pipher, one of our own culture's wise women, a down-to-earth midwesterner who eats a lot of pie, and a world citizen whose heart is open to all. This book may stir you to become a cultural broker yourself, and you'll find your life enriched beyond measure. This book deserves the highest recommendation.

Warm and wonderful
By absent_minded_prof
This terrific book seeks to convey the life experiences of a multitude of refugees, from a variety of countries, who somehow found their way to Lincoln, Nebraska. It helps us understand how truly gigantic culture shock can be, and how unbelievably lucky we all are to live in this protected Disneyland that we call America.
Most of these amazing people have lived through things that would make other Americans ashamed, to complain of the things in our lives that we consider "major problems." One African refugee describes how his father was literally forced to applaud, while 14 year old "soldiers" killed some of his own children right in front of him. Others are fleeing starvation so terrible that they were forced to eat grass, dogs, or worse. Yet here these people are, smiling hopefully at their new neighbors, hoping to start a better life as fellow Americans.
What is the internet? They don't know. What is an "atom bomb"? Many people around the world are apparently unaware that it exists. What is money? Refugees from primitive tribes don't really "get" the concept. Will voting for a certain political candidate endanger their children's lives, if the opponent wins? Their lives have led them to think so.
You have to root for these incredible people. It makes you want to go out and meet some refugees, and talk to them for yourself. One might suspect that some of them are fearful of what is happening in our country right now (lawful FBI surveillance, etc.) but the fact is, people from cultures with different alphabets literally can't even spell ACLU, FBI, CNN, or even ABC. They're so lost it boggles the mind. They need friends to help them understand. They need you.
Mary Pipher has divided her inspiring testament into three parts. The first part, "Hidden in Plain Sight," deals with the initial arrival of refugees, and their efforts to make sense of America. The second part, "Refugees across the Life Cycle," walks us through a collection of vignettes based upon the experiences, respectively, of children, teens, young adults, and parents in refugee families. The third part, "The Alchemy of Healing -- Turning Pain into Meaning," helps us see how incredibly strong these people are, and how their strength, compassion, and wisdom are guided and tempered by their experiences. Finally, there are three VERY helpful little appendices, giving specific, detailed advice about real ways that readers can get involved, and make a difference, in our own hometowns.
Would you like to get a quick visual sense of just how "white bread" the Lincoln, Nebraska area is, to understand the preposterous homogeneity in which these lost, bewildered, global refugees must find a place? If so, I'd like to recommend that you see the 1999 Reese Witherspoon/Matthew Broderick film "Election." It was filmed just a few miles down route 80 from Lincoln, and not only is every single face visible in the film of European extraction -- I think they are literally ALL of NORTHERN European extraction. I'm serious. Don't get me wrong -- they're perfectly nice people (often incredibly nice, actually, as Mary Pipher makes clear), but not necessarily too well-prepared for diversity in their community. That's what these refugees need to face.
If you enjoy this book, I would like to recommend that you seek out "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down," by Anne Fadiman, which is about Laotian refugees in Massachusetts. Also, look online for the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees) website, which has a lot of nice features to keep you informed about refugees worldwide.

Heartbreaking and inspiring
By An Avid Amazon buyer
This carefully researched and beautifully written account of Pipher's experiences getting to know and understand the diverse refugee community in Lincoln, Nebraska is both heartbreaking and inspiring. The stories of poverty, loss and resilience she shares help to personalize the people and places most of us think of as not really pertaining to us. Because Pipher is not just an observer, but an active participant in the process of helping her town's refugees, her book and its practical suggestions carry much weight. I highly recommend it, particularly to anyone in reasonable health, living above the poverty level, who has a complaint of any kind about the quality of their life.

Paulie Vergen is your average, everyday vampire. He’s short, overweight, and balding, and he’s a bit lacking in the realm of self confidence. Life was what it was for Paulie until the day that a newly infected werewolf landed on his doorstep. That day launched the one (and only, to this point) adventure that Paulie had ever had ... and it was a doozy. Since new werewolves suffer from amnesia, Paulie dubs the werewolf “Mr. Biscuits” by night and “Burt Biscuits” by day (you know, because werewolves are only werewolves at night and all). Paulie has to help Burt get to Yezan, the land of the werewolves, in order to find help in getting Burt’s memories back. Unfortunately, Stelan Bumache--the notable assassin who works for King Larkin in Yezan--has been hired to kill Burt. Will Paulie and Burt successfully navigate the treacherous path from Viq to Yezan while avoiding attempts by Stelan Bumache to destroy them both?

Heartily endorsed by humans, vampires, ogres, trolls, and werewolves alike.
By Utenzi
This is a very well written paranormal novel with a decidedly comedic turn. Not what you'd normally expect when reading about the journey of a vampire and a werewolf. And let's not forget Bumache, the assassin that is chasing them. By the way, the name Bumache foreshadows a number of butt references but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

This is also a very practical book since it includes a host of tips on traveling. For example, you should stay in Troll-run hotels due to their exceptional hospitality and attention to detail. And the book even comes with a coupon for using Ogre-powered bicycle tours. Neat, huh?

This book by John Logsdon and Christopher Young reminds me of the middle novels in the Myth Adventures series by Robert Lynn Asprin. The pointed references to slightly renamed companies and individuals like Microsoft, Apple, and Google allow the authors to air their viewpoint on modern society in a very amusing way. I found this treatment very entertaining yet the book also works on a purely straight road adventure basis. When you get right down to it, The Journey Home is a book about the transformation of a mild mannered character into a stronger more self-reliant one and that's a pretty universal tale.

I won this book on Goodreads.

A Great Fun Read
By Tom in Germantown
A enjoyable sequel to their 1st book in the Ononokin universe. If you like Asprin's Myth, Inc. books, you will certainly enjoy this book & their previous on A Quest of Undoing. I highly recommend them both. While set in the same "universe", it is not necessary to have read the 1st one but you will probably want to after reading The Journey Home. I hope the authors continue with a 3rd book soon.

BOOK REMINDS KIDS TO WASH HANDS
By The Supe
I love this book-- Every kid I know who read the book -now- wash their hands without being told to do so. And they have not -- had the flu this year. A great cold-virus preventer!

Not for preschoolers!
By ZooKeeperOf2
The book has a long, complicated story that does very little to excite kids into wanting to clean their hands. Most of the story has nothing to do with washing hands. The cover illustrations lead me to believe a song would be practiced in the book in order to intrigue children who like music. Not so - a song is only mentioned. The illustrations in the book are confusing to my 5 year olds because the names stay the same, but the nationality of the characters and their features change.

The Reckoning: Iraq and the Legacy of Saddam Hussein (Norton Paperback), by Sandra Mackey

Saddam Hussein is high on America's enemies list―but does an Iraq without him hold the seeds of the next Yugoslavia?

To the dismay of many in the West, the Gulf War ended with Saddam Hussein still in control, still defiant, and more determined to use any means of striking back. How far did he go? And now that Afghanistan's ruling Taliban has been vanquished and the al Quaeda network scattered, how far should the United States go in pursuit of its war on terrorism? The central question posed in this book is whether a future Iraq without Saddam Hussein will be even more unstable and more problematical to the security of the United States. The Reckoning is an account of the forces―historical, religious, ethnic, and political―that produced Saddam's dictatorship. Forged after World War I from the Mesopotamian provinces of the collapsed Ottoman Empire, Iraq has never had a national identity or a sense of common purpose. Hussein, ruling by terror rather than by persuasion, pitted the various ethnic groups, religious interests, and tribes against one another and in so doing achieved the destruction of Iraq's middle class and civilized society. After he goes, however he goes, the country could be the site of conflict even more vicious than the Balkan wars. Now more than ever, the future of Iraq is of critical importance to America's dealings with the Muslim world, and Sandra Mackey's informed narrative gives us a new understanding of the politics and national character of the country. 16 b/w photographs; 6 maps.

From Publishers Weekly
A journalist who has long covered the Middle East, Mackey destroys the myth that toppling Saddam Hussein will solve Iraq's problems and America's. She clearly traces the complex and diverse history of the country from its biblical roots to the present day. The most salient feature of the country, she argues strongly, is its fragility: Iraq is a patchwork of peoples (both Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims, as well as Kurds) that hangs together by a thread. Without addressing how these peoples can form a national identity, the author claims, a post-Saddam Iraq could be worse than the Balkans. But even though much of the book centers on Iraq's long history, it is the author's account of the past 40 years that is the most instructive. While much of the information about Saddam has been presented elsewhere, Mackey summarizes his career well: his seizure of power, with its emphasis on the country's Arab roots, came after a long time of local chaos, and his rule of terror has kept him in charge but led to wars that impoverished his people. "Like Baghdad at the end of the Gulf War, Iraq itself is a body whose skin is intact but whose bones are broken." Mackey's last chapter is her most chilling. If there is no focus on what will come after Saddam, she says, then Iraq's future the disintegration of the country into separate warring cantons will be a nightmare, both for its people and for the United States. With the Bush administration focusing on Iraq as the next step in its war against terrorism, this book sounds an important cautionary note.

From Library Journal
Iraq has been a country of great interest to the United States since the 1991 Gulf War. Although that conflict ended over a decade ago with the military defeat of Saddam Hussein's forces and their expulsion from Kuwait, low-level U.S. bombing of Iraqi targets has continued to the present time. The events of September 11 have elevated Iraq to a higher level of concern to U.S. decision-makers. In recent months, calls for a massive attack against Iraq are being heard from different governmental and journalistic corners in the United States. Yet, Iraq and its history remain a mystery to most Americans. This highly readable, jargon-free, and evenhanded book goes a long way in providing a comprehensive account of Iraq's recent political history to Western readers. Mackey, a veteran journalist who has traveled to Iraq and has written extensively on the Middle East, has done an admirable job of explaining the myriad social, political, and cultural forces that have shaped the contours of the contemporary Iraqi state and its authoritarian political system. Recommended for all public libraries. Nader Entessar, Spring Hill Coll., Mobile, AL

From Booklist
Veteran journalist Mackey (The Saudis: Inside the Desert Kingdom [1987]; The Iranians: Persia, Islam and the Soul of a Nation [1996])offers a comprehensive history of Iraq and its early Mesopotamian civilization with penetrating biographies of all of its historical figures through the ages, shedding perspective on the current regime of Saddam Hussein and looking ahead to what an Iraq without Hussein might resemble. Modern Iraq is a concoction of multiple divergent communities (Sunni, Shii, and Christian) who view themselves as having a national identity apart from Arab nationalism. King Faisal, modern Iraq's architect, built a strong national army as a tool for cementing all of the elements within. It took a tough Saddam Hussein to later bring the power of the state to fruition. But Mackey warns that those who simplistically see the removal of Saddam as a cure-all are fooling themselves. Chaos in the Persian Gulf could ensue, the author argues, which would threaten American security, as well as thrust the U.S. into the hellish task of "nation-building." An extremely thorough appraisal. Allen Weakland

Probing the Complexities of Iraqi History and Policy
By S. Miska
The Reckoning rates as indispensable reading and study for all students, policy analysts and makers, military leaders, and anyone interested in Iraq's historical basis and future development. Mackey begins with the ancient history of Mesopotamia and quickly transitions through to contemporary policy. She includes an afterword written on Christmas Day of 2002, with the winds of war billowing from Washington. Her detailed account of Saddam's legacy and struggle provides valuable insight to anyone with an interest in the region. Although she prescribes no policy recommendations for the future of Iraq, her final words remain an issue the U.S. continues to struggle with today. "To what extent was the U.S. going to be pulled into the abyss of Iraq?" This book provides a fantastic foundation to understand the formation and development of the Iraqi state before and during Hussein's reign.
My one critique: the book provides valuable insight into the complexities of Iraq and how the state became that way, but Mackey does not attempt to break new ground. She proposes no new policies to help future administrations, nor strategies to help military leaders, NGOs, diplomats or others attempting to negotiate the pitfalls of the region. Regardless, I am better off for having read the book, and the author presents plenty of detailed research. Her selected bibliography provides the reader with numerous sources, scholarly and otherwise. Some military units preparing to deploy to Iraq have bought every key leader a copy of Mackey's book. Those leaders will be much better prepared to understand the quagmire they are about to enter, regardless of whether they know what strategies to pursue.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in understanding the region or the news better.

The consequences of war with Iraq
By A Customer
The Reckoning: Iraq and the Legacy of Saddam Hussein by Sandra Mackey
This book provides an extremely important ability to understand the dynamics of Iraq, especially related to a war with consequences not limited to Iraq, but to the whole Middle East and may escalate beyond. The authors states "the road to Baghdad must lead through Jerusalem". Because the writing is so good, this is a very readable book.
The scholarship on the history of the region and Islam, and the development of the post WWI state is essential to the understanding of Iraq and the role of Saddam Hussein. The author traces this history and brings it to the present dilemma. This book chronicles Saddam Hussein's well orchestrated control over his country from the time of his accession to today in light of the various ethnic and religious groups and his strong tribal/military strengths. Control was achieved using techniques of a modern state; economic controls, environmental manipulation, genocide, and removal of the dissenting press and religious leaders resulting in lost of an educated population and alternatives for government.
The last chapter is provocative and terrifying. The author makes the case that removing Hussein will not alone solve the major issues, and may escalate the Arab/Israel conflict with the developed world losing essential oil supplies and potentially the elimination of Israel. The case is made that solutions on Palestine must be part of the Iraq policy. One can debate what that policy should be, but the author suggests that the U.S. has behaved at best as nave and at worst as manipulative and destructive to the Arab world.
The book shows that the U.S. must look beyond the elimination of Hussein to the larger view of the consequences and methods to ensure stability in the region. She questions if a large U.S. (UN) military force in Iraq would ensure oil production, minimize the conflict with Israel, and eventually produce a democratic nation representing the major ethnic religious groups. The author shows that even with a very large police action, these goals may be nearly impossible.
To the world, the only U.S. interest is the strategically important oil and the cruelty of Hussein, who wants to have the military power to protect his position. Without the oil, the brutality would be a minor U.S. concern as it was in the Congo. The book provides a excellent launching pad for the discussion on the long term goals in the region.

A Good Historical Overview
By Brian D. Rubendall
The subtitle of "The Reckoning" is somewhat misleading, billing itself as being about "Iraq and the Legacy of Saddam Hussein," when nearly half of the book's length is devoted to Iraq's history BEFORE "The Butcher of Baghdad" came to power. Nevertheless, it still works quite well as a one volume overview and comes at a very critical time in which the U.S. is again considering military action against the country. It also chillingly portrays the trajedy that has befallen this turbulent country because of its unfortunate history and outlaw leadership.
The book mostly consists of historical accounts drawn from other sources. Author Sandra Mackey did in fact visit Iraq while researching it, but she was very limited in where she could go or who she could talk to. Her first person accounts of Saddam's totalitarian society are brief, but chilling in their implications. Mackey uses them as a backdrop for her straightforward account of Iraqi history from Mesopitamina times until the present. The story is a tragic one, of course, made even more so by the fact that the country enjoyed a brief period of prosperity before Saddam plunged it into the nightmares of the Iran/Iraq war, the Gulf War and internal genocides against the Shia and Kurd populations.
Mackey is a very good writer, and for the most part her prose is crisp and readable. On the downside, she repeats herself a bit too much, and at nearly 400 pages the narrative lags a little at times. Nevertheless, Mackey has provided a valuable service by giving Americans (and other Westerners) the chance to catch up on a subject that seems about to rivet the wrold's attention once again. For that, I give it an enthusiastic recommendation.

Introduction to Computation and Programming Using Python (MIT Press), by John V. Guttag

This book introduces students with little or no prior programming experience to the art of computational problem solving using Python and various Python libraries, including PyLab. It provides students with skills that will enable them to make productive use of computational techniques, including some of the tools and techniques of "data science" for using computation to model and interpret data. The book is based on an MIT course (which became the most popular course offered through MIT's OpenCourseWare) and was developed for use not only in a conventional classroom but in a massive open online course (or MOOC) offered by the pioneering MIT-Harvard collaboration edX.

Students are introduced to Python and the basics of programming in the context of such computational concepts and techniques as exhaustive enumeration, bisection search, and efficient approximation algorithms. The book does not require knowledge of mathematics beyond high school algebra, but does assume that readers are comfortable with rigorous thinking and not intimidated by mathematical concepts. Although it covers such traditional topics as computational complexity and simple algorithms, the book focuses on a wide range of topics not found in most introductory texts, including information visualization, simulations to model randomness, computational techniques to understand data, and statistical techniques that inform (and misinform) as well as two related but relatively advanced topics: optimization problems and dynamic programming. Introduction to Computation and Programming Using Python can serve as a stepping-stone to more advanced computer science courses, or as a basic grounding in computational problem solving for students in other disciplines.

Review

This is the 'computational thinking' book we have all been waiting for! With humor and historical anecdotes, John Guttag conveys the breadth and joy of computer science without compromise to technical detail. This book is perfect for any student who wants to explore the essence of computer science.

(Jeannette M. Wing, President's Professor of Computer Science and Department Head, Carnegie Mellon University)

John Guttag is an extraordinary teacher and an extraordinary writer. (Perhaps having been an undergraduate English major -- an uncommon stepping stone to the leadership of the world's top EECS department -- has something to do with this.) This is not 'a Python book' -- although you will learn Python. Nor is it a 'programming book' -- although you will learn to program. It is a rigorous but eminently readable introduction to computational problem solving.

(Ed Lazowska, Bill & Melinda Gates Chair in Computer Science & Engineering, University of Washington)

There's no such thing as the only computer science book you'll ever need. But if you had to pick only one, this would be a great choice. You'll begin by getting a solid introduction to programming in Python. Armed with that, you'll go hands-on with important computing ideas like random methods, statistics, and optimization, using tools of great theoretical beauty and great practical importance.

(Hal Abelson, coauthor (with Gerald Jay Sussman) of Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs)

About the Author

Excellent book
By Mike K
Let me post a disclaimer first. I bought the paperback from MIT-press' website since it was cheaper after the edX discount.

Now the real deal : The book is excellent. It is the perfect companion to MIT's course on edX. I attended the course on a whim, since I already have a masters degree in computer engineer, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. The book takes a beginner from the basics to some of the most important aspects of computer science. There is a bit of graph theory, a bit of statistics, a bit of sorting, linear regression, data plotting using Pylab, and even the knapsack problem thrown in. I loved the book as well as the course, and will readily recommend both to people interested in computer science, irrespective of the level of their expertise (there is something for everyone).

I have read bad reviews about the Kindle edition of this book and so I will add that a DRM free e-book is also available for purchase from MIT-press' website. If you want the ability to open your e-book with any PDF reader, buy that instead of the Kindle version.

Five Stars for Sure, but only 1/3 about Python, mostly Algorithms and how to handle computational complexity.
By David S. Day
Bought this for the MIT Computer Science course 6.00.1x. It is a fast paced but very readable first year text for Computer Science. It uses Python 2.X as its language and you will come up to speed in Python quickly, and then spend the bulk of the book learning algorithms and computational techniques.

I am very pleased with the book. It is terse and fast. If you require a more leisurely pace, John Zelle's Python Programming, an Introduction to Computer Science takes 425 pages to cover what this book covers in 110 pages, and then has a short chapter just touching on what this book covers more deeply in the remaining 200 pages. Zelle's book is also a popular first year CS text, but obviously for a different audience. Obviously, you will learn more with this book if you can take the pace. I bought Zelle's book also and have used it for extra exercises and the occasional alternative explanation.

I also am using Problem Solving with Algorithms and Data Structures by Miller and Ranum to supplement/flesh out my algorithms knowledge during breaks in the class. This also seems to be a good book, and uses Python as its language for examples.

Buy Guttag for sure, or Zelle if you feel the need for a slower pace, and Miller and Ranum to flesh out your algorithms.

Too Much Prose
By Jonathan Marsan
Taking the edX class. I thought this book would help and it does: it repeats the content of the class, but adds very little. My issue with the book is that: 1) It isn't easy to search. 2) It covers concepts too quickly - very little review. 3) Programming terminology is "bolded", but no glossary is provided at the back.

I recommend the book to those taking the edX class simply because it helps reduce note-taking. But if you are a beginner at programming and just looking for a book to start learning Python, I am sure there are better ones out there (i.e. clearer books that are a little more "hands-on"). I have enjoyed learning web related languages with Sitepoint and O'reilly books, so I'll probably look into getting one of those to deepen my understanding of Python.
