About the Author
Changyi Gu has worked for multiple high tech companies across California over a 15+ year career. He is the founder of PulseRain Technology, LLC, a company that is focused on FPGA and embedded system design. He started his career in firmware development. With a deep passion in engineering, he later devoted himself to wireless hardware and programmable logic. He is therefore lucky enough to see things on both sides of the fence between software and hardware. He graduated from University of Southern California with an MS degree in VLSI. He also holds an MS degree in Communication, and a Bachelor degree in Computer Science, from Shanghai Jiaotong University, China.

I'm very excited to see a book like this finally coming out.

The embedded system industry is a very dynamic world. Engineers in the trades often get lost among the multi-discipline labyrinth. It doesn't help either that a lot of similar books on embedded system suffer from being out-of-date and thus becoming irrelevant with the ever-changing landscape of the industry.

And this book, "Building Embedded Systems: Programmable Hardware" by Changyi Gu, in my opinion, is a cookbook that provides instructions and guidelines in a very readable way. Regardless whether you're a newbie to embed system or an industry veteran, you might benefit equally from this book's comprehensive, yet concise, and more importantly, extremely pragmatic content.

On the software side, although I have been working on C/C++ projects for more than a decade, I still find the relevant tricks presented in this book enlightening. So if you are new to embedded systems, follow the instructions and examples in this book. That will save you from rummaging in the dark.

And the talks on the hardware side are equally savvy, although I could be biased in this regard since I deal less with hardware than software. However, as the author has pointed out, the hardware these days are becoming more programmable, and the schemes discussed in this book are insightful.

BTW, this book also teaches you how to crunch numbers. So read it If you like to put two and two together.

Great book for both EE and CS students

This book has got a full treatment of embedded system design, with a nimble approach. And you can practically see how those courses you learned during college time become associated with the real world. Obviously the author has done a lot of hands-on work for various aspects of the embedded systems, and knows what he is doing.

As someone who makes a living on numbers, I like the way how math is treated by this book. Chapter 12 has given a diligent examination of various number crunching approaches, along with implementation details down to the bit level (For example, the CORDIC algorithm has received a complete coverage, which servers as a handy toolbox). Such thoroughness is rare among engineering books in this category. That’s probably the best way to take “calculated risks”, as suggested by the book.

Overall, I give this book five stars. And I highly recommend it to those students with EE or CS background.

With Breadth and Depth

Recently the word “Arduino” started to pop up here and there on my timeline. Lots of my friends began to get the hang of embedded systems, and that somehow piqued my interest too.

I have been working with software for quite a while, but I’m fairly new to embedded systems. And this title is a good handbook that covers just about every corner, while provides both the breadth and the depth in this field. Some other books I ran into only scratch the surface of many. If you are like me, who is looking for a crash course and a goto book, you might want to try this one out.

About the Author
Thomas Morgan, (45) founder and director of QuickStart Publications, lendertraining.com and Loan Officer Bootcamp, attended New York University until 1983. He joined the mortgage business in 1983 to review closing documentation for a multifamily lender. Thomas entered residential lending in 1985. He was a top producing loan officer with Wye, Citicorp, AMRES (Chase) and FMI, and was also a branch and area manager until opening his own mortgage firm, Hamilton Mortgage, in 1992. Along the way he processed, underwrote, closed, funded or serviced over $585,000,000 in mortgages. At Hamilton he developed an internal training program for loan officers and operations staff. There was so much demand for quality training that, in 1996, he formed QuickStart Mortgage Training (see August 1996 Origination News). Since that time QuickStart has trained over 22,000 loan officers, processors, underwriters and closers, and developed internal training programs for over 800 mortgage companies, including 4 of the top 25 national lenders. He is the author of 16 mortgage related books. He is a certified trainer for ILCPE, Top Producer, EZ Mortgage, Byte, and Contour. He is approved in the states of IL, IN, TX, MD, NC, SC, KY, OH, UT, WV, and WI.

Great Review of Woodworking

There is a lot we do not know or have forgotten. This book pulls up knowledge that was common in 1900 but is mostly lost today. From using tools to building furniture and out buildings this book literally has it all. Of course, you will be reading about how to use hand tools and make joints that are beyond belief today, but it is a lot of fun even if you decide to build nothing like the items described in the book.

A lot of basic woodworking knowledge is here, and a lot of it is never before heard in the modern world advice. The book is profusely illustrated, but be aware that the illustrations are complex and not very large.

A good book. Worth the price.

Great book! Really test and expands your knowledge.

I am very impressed with this book. Not only for the information withing the chapter exercises but with the ability to use your skills in labs and practice database to expand and really test your knowledge.

It has a lot of problems even within the chapter work that goes beyond things that have been covered. It has a color key for those things. So you really do have to think when using this book. It isn't just a step-by-step follow along without thinking and you will complete the chapter easily.

You will know access if you go through this whole book.

Improving your game

You can pick up some good tips on how to beat your opponents from two-time National Scrabble Champion Joe Edley along with some challenging puzzles in this modest Scrabble puzzle book. I particularly recommend the material on pages 194-202 where Edley suggests that you develop the habit of asking yourself questions before making a play.

For example, question number one is, "Do I have a bingo?" (A good first question!) Question number two is the obvious, Which bonus squares are available, but question number three really gets to the nitty-gritty of good play: "Can you 'hook' any words? Look at every word already on the board and ask yourself if any single letter can be added to the front or back to form another word." Also important is question number four: "What will my 'leave' be after I've made my play?"

Too often the beginning player does not pay enough attention to the tiles he or she is going to be stuck with after a play. Sometimes, Edley advises, it is better to make a lower-scoring play in order to leave oneself with tiles likely (with a little help) to form a bingo.

The bulk of the book is devoted to Scrabble puzzles on various themes, e.g., "Placing your letters on hot spots"; using the J, Q, X and Z; two-, three-, four- and five-tile plays, etc. There is a diagram of the Scrabble grid with some plays already made. Underneath the diagram are the letters in several different racks. You are asked to find the best play. Edley recommends that you do the puzzles by setting them up on your own Scrabble board. I think that is the best way as well since the diagrams in the book are in black and white and so the bonus squares are not colored, and are highlighted only by the letters "DWS," "DLS" ("Double Word Score," "Double Letter Score"), etc. This makes it hard to get a quick feel for where to look. At least that was my experience.

A handy feature is the list of the 97 two-letter words allowed in official Scrabble tournaments on page 7. (I think that has been changed to 96 with "da" now being disallowed.) Interesting features include the weighed scores for answers to the various puzzles. For example, for the puzzle on page 93 there is an "expert" score (for five racks) of 155, a "good" score of 145, and an "average" score of 120. But Edley also gives his score of 164 and challenges you to beat it.

There are 800 puzzles, so this book will last through many a long winter's night; however this is not as good a book as the more substantial Everything Scrabble (revised 2001) by Edley (along with John D. Williams, Jr.), which I also recommend for the serious Scrabble player.

Scrabble Puzzle Book Review

This book is excellent as it contains many ways to improve and versify your Scrabble skills. There are many new games and approaches, which can range from novice to challenging. It contains many new words and methods of setting up the board during play, and if one really examines the games, one will certainly improve their Scrabble skills. As well, there are many games provided that will take hours to decipher and play.

This by far is the best experience I have had so far with books that I buy. The customer service went above and beyond my expectations. The book is in perfect condition. Sometimes you don't know what to expect. I got a note sent along with the book. That doesn't usually happen. It was a nice surprise.
