About the Author
John A. Tracy (Boulder, Colorado) is Professor of Accounting, Emeritus, at the University of Colorado in Boulder. Before his 35-year tenure at Boulder, he was on the business faculty for four years at the University of California in Berkeley. Early in his career he was a staff accountant with Ernst & Young. John is the author of several books on accounting and finance, including The Fast Forward MBA in Finance, How To Read a Financial Report, and Small Business Financial Management Kit For Dummies with his son Tage Tracy. John received his BSC degree from Creighton University. He earned his MBA and PhD degrees at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He is a CPA (inactive) in Colorado.

Unlike Accounting for Dummies, this one isn't for the newbies

I agree with reviewer 'Adult Learner2 "ace_magician"' and advice against buying the book if you're new to accounting and expect to build up your skills by going through the practice questions.

Here's my response to the review of 'Adult Learner2 "ace_magician"':

I regret to report that I failed to heed the reviewer's advice and have suffered for it.

Given that this title is a "workbook," the reader is supposed to have rudimentary knowledge of accounting principles before starting the book, and I don't find that unreasonable. I've finished Tracy's Accounting for Dummies and liked it for its clarity. I wholly expected this book to be just as clear and easy to follow. It isn't.

As you can see from all the other reviews, this is best as a refresher course for someone who isn't a real dummy in accounting and not as an introductory course for beginners.

While it did help me get a better idea of how the concepts work in practice, I only made it half-way through and decided to start over with another book. The author has failed to explain many customary practices used in accounting and simply expects the reader to figure them out in context. While that is indeed possible, all the guesswork involved makes me unsure of just how correct I'm about anything.

The chapter 2 practice questions that the reviewer mentioned are particularly atrocious in its failure to explain. Though later chapters are much better, the book fails to build up the reader's knowledge gradually and proceeds at an uneven path. For an accounting novice, while you do get something out of the book, for all the effort you have to put into figuring everything out yourself, you don't learn enough from it for all the hard work involved.

Also a note to Kindle readers: The answer keys are apart from the questions and there are no easy way to go to the answers except flipping through the pages to find them. The back-and-forth between going to the answer keys and continuing reading the next section or next question is frustrating and annoying. If you're buying this, get a paper book instead.

technical glitches

I'm not an accountant, so I really cannot rate the overall content of the book. To me it seems to be pretty good, and the reading is managable and easy to comprehend. The BIG problem with this book is the digital editing. I am reading it on a PC app and the right side of all the figures listed in the book are cut off, making them mostly useless. Figure 1-3 about the statement of cash flow was the worst because all the numbers were removed from the figure. The numbers that were supposed to be there, were listed in the discussion of the table. To get the whole picture of the table and finally understand it, I had to copy the text on a sheet of paper and then fill-in the numbers. MADDENING. I also tried to adjust font size and number of words per line, but to no avail. THE PUBLISHER AND/OR AMAZON NEEDS TO FIX THIS GLITCH.

Don't buy this product until these problems corrected!!

If it were possible to give zero stars, I would do so. There is no functioning Table of Contents. There are no page numbers. I have found this to be true of every "For Dummies" title I have bought for viewing on my Kindle App on iPad (I have three books, all bought through Amazon). I have sent an email message from within the Kindle ("Contact Us" in Settings) regarding this problem, but no response received...yet! Over a week now.

The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 was just one link in a chain of events leading to World War I and the downfall of the Austro-Hungarian empire. By 1918, after nearly four hundred years of rule, the Habsburg monarchy was expunged in an instant of history. Remarkably, despite tales of decadence, ethnic indifference, and a failure to modernize, the empire enjoyed a renewed popularity in interwar narratives. Today, it remains a crucial point of reference for Central European identity, evoking nostalgia among the nations that once dismembered it.

The Afterlife of Austria-Hungary examines histories, journalism, and literature in the period between world wars to expose both the positive and the negative treatment of the Habsburg monarchy following its dissolution and the powerful influence of fiction and memory over history. Originally published in Polish, Adam Kozuchowski’s study analyzes the myriad factors that contributed to this phenomenon. Chief among these were economic depression, widespread authoritarianism on the continent, and the painful rise of aggressive nationalism. Many authors of these narratives were well-known intellectuals who yearned for the high culture and peaceable kingdom of their personal memory.

Kozuchowski contrasts these imaginaries with the causal realities of the empire’s failure. He considers the aspirations of Czechs, Poles, Romanians, Hungarians, and Austrians, and their quest for autonomy or domination over their neighbors, coupled with the wave of nationalism spreading across Europe. Kozuchowski then dissects the reign of the legendary Habsburg monarch, Franz Joseph, and the lasting perceptions that he inspired.

To Kozuchowski, the interwar discourse was a reaction to the monumental change wrought by the dissolution of Austria-Hungary and the fear of a history lost. Those displaced at the empire’s end attempted, through collective (and selective) memory, to reconstruct the vision of a once great multinational power. It was an imaginary that would influence future histories of the empire and even became a model for the European Union.

Lucidly written chains of tautologies.

It's difficult to rate this book. It's lucidly written with a fine translation into English, it states its intent clearly and achieves this aim and there's no risk of being deterred by reading fatigue. It amply provides what it promises: a survey of the various attitudes and claims by commentators and novelists between 1919-1939 on why the empire collapsed. If you want a comprehensive presentation of the different viewpoints, that's presented here. That's all the author promised us and he lives up to his promise. In this sense, the book deserves 5*.

I'm disappointed because I wish he'd written a different book. The content of the book contains little that's arresting and tends to be a listing of tautologies. Let this one stand for oodles. Austrians that idolized Germany blame the collapse of the Empire upon those who turned away from Germany before and after 1918. German haters ascribe the Empire's demise to too much German influence. Do we really need this tautology elucidated for us? It boils down to thinkers & commentators producing writings consistent with their prejudices. (How could they do otherwise?) Couldn't we all have surmised this without an author laying out the correspondences? Such straightforward tautologies abound and are echoed in most chapters: Franz Ferdinand worshippers claim his influence was fatally diluted, while his detractors attribute the Empire's collapse to a hidebound Emperor who held office too long.

So where are we in this HALL OF MIRRORS THAT WE NEVER TRANSCEND, WITH NO VIEWPOINT TAKING PRECEDENCE OVER ANY OF THE OTHERS?

If you want names named, tautologies brought into the light and given citations that you can nail down where you can find these tautologies, you'll find them conscientiously gathered in this book --- just as the author stated from the beginning. He delivers what he promises.

I'd prefer he had attempted a further and more meaningful reach.

Because the CONTENT veers heavily into tautologies and is silent on the consequences for Europe of the Empire's collapse, I don't see real significance in this book.

Superb book

This book details how ONE unreliable Iraqi emigrant to Germany provided ALL of the U.S. "verified intelligence" which led to the U.S. claims of Iraqi biological weapons programs and supplies which was a major excuse the U.S. used to invade Iraq.
The book drags a bit in the first half; the last half picks up nicely.

A classic produced shamefully

This is a reprint produced in India of a classic volume, out of print. The material is important and needs to be in print. But the production is shoddy: paper chip and full of wrinkles and blemishes. The authors deserve better. Perhaps some other outfit will seek the copyright to do a better job.

Great for those who don't know much

I wasn't raised Hindu but was always curious about the religion. I've read Buck's translations of the Ramayana and Mahabharata (I'm working on the Penguin edition of the latter), along with other books (a translation of the Upanisads,etc.), but the original myths were largely inaccessible to me because I only speak English. For me the book was great; summaries plus myths that speak for themselves. And the myths are really interesting.

Classical Hindu Mythology

Just read the previous review from Norway which does not make much sense to me. This is a lengthy, detailed and dense translation of a wealth of Hindu myths. To my mind it is neither short (373 pages) nor simple, but difficult for the average reader. It reads like a scholarly textbook that requires study to use. I found it fascinating and worth the effort. But I wonder if the previous reviewer and I have read the same book!

About the Author

After graduating from Cornell University at age eighteen with majors in physics, mathematics and philosophy, Wolfgang Smith took an M.S. from Purdue, following which he spent three years at Bell Aircraft Corporation as an aerodynamicist. During this period he gained recognition for his pioneering papers on the effect of diffusion fields, which provided a theoretical solution to the re-entry problem for space flight. After receiving a Ph.D. in mathematics from Columbia University, Dr. Smith pursued a professorial career in that field. Soon however his center of interest shifted from the pursuit of science to the critique of scientism and the rediscovery of metaphysics as a theological discipline. He has authored six books and numerous articles, and is today widely recognized as a leading authority in these twin fields.

Addresses root problems with theistic evolution that require a rewrite of basic Christian doctrines

Dr. Wolfgang Smith's educational and occupational background is in math and science, but for a number of years he has turned his attention to metaphysics, particularly examining and critiquing "scientism," defined by Wikipedia as "the view that empirical science constitutes the most authoritative worldview or most valuable part of human learning to the exclusion of other viewpoints." Smith's book, Theistic Evolution: The Teilhardian Heresy was first published in 1988 as Teilhardism and the New Religion. Theistic Evolution, published in 2012, has been updated and rearranged somewhat from the original book.

In the intervening 24 years, the influence of Teilhard de Chardin has become even clearer, especially among those holding theistic evolution views. Theological problems arising from theistic evolution seem to undermine belief in Adam and Eve's fall from grace, original sin, and other essential beliefs central to Christianity. While most theistic evolutionists try to reconcile these problems while remaining within the boundaries or historical Christianity, de Chardin seemed determined to reinvent Christianity to make it fit into a worldview based on evolution as the central idea. Smith writes:

For Teilhard de Chardin, evolution is not simply a scientific theory, but an established and henceforth irrefutable truth. It is in fact the rock upon which he would found his entire doctrine. "Is evolution a theory, a system or a hypothesis?" he writes. "It is much more: it is a general condition to which all theories, all hypotheses, all systems must bow and which they must satisfy henceforward if they are to be thinkable and true. Evolution is a light illuminating all facts, a curve that all lines must follow." ( p.25).

While most theistic evolutionists have at least some concern, if not a great deal of concern, for theological orthodoxy, many have been heavily influenced by de Chardin to the point that they adjust their theology to fit evolutionary assumptions rather than maintaining orthodox theology while exploring scientific questions for which proof remains elusive at best.

Smith draws heavily on de Chardin's written works with which he seems very familiar. He highlights de Chardin's key ideas such as the "Point Omega " (p. 94), "complexification" (p. 53), and personhood developed through a process of "aggregation" (p. 194), examining what de Chardin taught and then contrasting it with both scientific facts and Christian doctrine. This approach is very helpful since it is often difficult to read de Chardin and cut through the verbiage to what he is actually saying.

De Chardin, a French Jesuit priest, ran into serious conflicts with the Catholic Church over his ideas, but he was never excommunicated or formally declared a heretic. However, Smith clearly identifies de Chardin's teachings as heretical, providing the evidence in this book. For example, he quotes de Chardin's statement:

"As you already know, what dominates my interest and my preoccupation is the effort to establish in myself and to spread around a new religion (you may call it a better Christianity) in which the personal God ceases to be the great Neolithic proprietor of former times, in order to become the soul of the world; our religious and cultural stage calls for this." (p. 224).

De Chardin's new religion fits the definition of scientism, and he criticizes traditional Christianity for not being "scientific." Yet de Chardin's philosophy also includes improbable New Age spiritual notions alongside his supposedly scientific beliefs. While rejecting the resurrection, saints, and miracles, he proposes "cosmic convergence" and "Christic emergence" (p. 245) among other ideas. De Chardin presented some of these ideas in flowery prose that probably left many readers impressed with the high-minded sound of it yet short on theological understanding.

Theistic Evolution: The Teilhardian Heresy is not an easy read since it's not dealing with simple ideas. Yet, Smith does an excellent job of helping those unfamiliar with de Chardin understand some of his foundational ideas while simultaneously showing how faulty they are.

Because de Chardin has had such tremendous influence on Catholic thinking about the theory of evolution, I especially recommend this book to Catholics concerned about the Church's position on the topic.

Beautiful Book about an Ugly Doctrine

This book brings all of the philosophical and scientific clarity that Wolfgang Smith has earned since the 1988 publication of Teilhardism and the New Religon to bear on the study. It is mostly the same work but with some additions here and there. It has one drawback compared to its earlier editions. Some of Smith's more obscure theological views relating to Meister Eckhart cause him to pull a few more punches towards the end of the book. However, the book is brilliant.

The influence of Teilhard de Chardin is extremely difficult to measure. But the Leadership Conference of Women Religious just had a "futurist" (a term that applies to Teilhard disciples) Barbara Marx Harbard talk to them about "conscious evolution" and the "noosphere." What is a "noosphere?" Where does Original Sin fit into Teilhard's theology? [Hint: it doesn't.]

Teilhard is a gifted communicator. But every trick he pulls is unmasked by Wolfgang Smith in this great book. Buy this book instead of the earlier TAN edition and read it immediately after completing Cosmos and Transcendence, Smith's first book.

Wolfgang Smith presents a convincing and critical review of the Teilhardian perspective. Briefly familiarizing oneself with some of Teilhard's thought would make this read even more fruitful in understanding a current of thought that bears a strong influence on today's faithful.

I rarely write reviews, but was compelled to do so for this comprehensive book on the newest function emerging in the software industry, Customer Success. As an Exec relatively new to the field, but well experienced in sales and account management, I find myself coming back to this book over and over for guidance and inspiration. It is clear, straight forward and full of practical, applicable information that can be utilized by any sales organization. It is a great read for anyone new to Customer Success or for CXO/VP levels as they move to the subscription economy.
