About the Author
Paul Davis (Ph.D., University of Wisconsin), professor emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico, has been the recipient of several teaching awards and academic honors, including that of Master teacher. He has taught courses since 1962 in composition, rhetoric, and nineteenth-century literature and has written and edited many scholarly books, including The Penguin Dickens Companion (1999), Dickens A to Z (1998), and The Lives and Times of Ebenezer Scrooge (1990). He has also written numerous scholarly and popular articles on solar energy and Victorian book illustration. His most recent book is Critical Companion to Charles Dickens (2007).

Gary Harrison (Ph.D., Stanford University), professor and director of graduate studies at the University of New Mexico, has won numerous fellowships and awards for scholarship and teaching. He has taught courses in world literature, British Romanticism, and literary theory at the University of New Mexico since 1987. Harrison's publications include a critical study of William Wordsworth, Wordsworth's Vagrant Muse: Poetry, Poverty, and Power (1994); as well as several articles on topics such as John Clare's poetry, Romanticism and Ecology, nineteenth-century culture, and teaching world literature.

David M. Johnson (Ph.D., University of Connecticut), professor emeritus of English at the University of New Mexico, has taught courses in world literature, mythology, the Bible as literature, philosophy and literature, and creative writing since 1965. He has written, edited, and contributed to numerous scholarly books and collections of poetry, including Fire in the Fields (1996) and Lord of the Dawn: The Legend of Quetzalcoatl (1987). He has also published scholarly articles, poetry, and translations of Nahuatl myths. His most recent book of poetry is Rebirth of Wonder: Poems of The Common Life (University of New Mexico Press, 2007).

John F. Crawford (Ph.D., Columbia University; postdoctoral studies, Yale University), associate professor of English emeritus at the University of New Mexico, has taught medieval, world, and other literature courses since 1965 at a number of other institutions including California Institute of Technology and Hunter College and Herbert Lehmann College of CUNY. The publisher of West End Press, an independent literary press with 120 titles, Crawford has also edited This Is About Vision: Interviews with Southwestern Writers (1990) and written articles on multicultural literature of the Southwest.

Great selections and organization in book

This book carries a great selection of classic works by tradition
I used this book for my World Lit course in January(required text), but have decided not to sell it back and keep it for reading sake.

I am used to reading from Norton Anthologies, so was a bit skeptical about reading from the Bedford Anthology. Surprisingly, in the end, I actually enjoyed the Bedford collection more. The context is given in the "in-between" blue pages of the book and gives excellent articles, short stories, and historical background for the main stories themselves. They were extremely helpful and expanded both my knowledge of significant historical events as well as influential literature.

Although, this product is considered the "compact" edition, the book is still considerably large and thick.
It is definitely not a book you would carry around in your purse or take everywhere with you for leisure reading.

It said it was a used a book. It ment it. All the pages were there; however, there v was something sticky on the cover I wish had been cleaned off. But it shipped quickly so it wasn't bad

"The Mission Classified".....Book 2

"Above Reproach" is a very good sequel to "Beyond Instinct". In this book Lynn Ames has brought the well known characters of Kate & Jay, Peter & Lorraine, Justine, Sebastien, Vaughn and a new and psychically gifted Sedona as a love interest for Vaughn. Lynn has united this group into one cohesive unit in a very suspenseful and action packed story! Due to a different and somewhat surprising ending, another book needs to follow soon to, hopefully, settle the issue(s) for us fans out here in book and Kindle land.

Kudos to Lynn Ames for another solid series: "The Mission Classified". Keep 'em coming!!

I actually read this this book before the first book of the series...this book i thought was very well written and kept me interested...the characters blended well...and i didnt have to read the first book in the series to know who people were...i am now reading the first book and now i know what the back stories of each main character is...i don't like to give story lines away so that is why i don't mention any specific character... the only reason i did not give 5 stars is because i believe the books are too short...they could be longer...i really hope the future books could be longer..great book!

It just doesn't click

Above Reproach is book two in the Mission Classified series by Lynn Ames. It's another action/suspense story that reintroduces the reader to Vaughn Elliott, one of the major characters in the first book Beyond Instinct.

For people who have read many of Lynn Ames' books, this one is difficult to evaluate. It's certainly far better than her first books, but it doesn't show the promise or ability of her recent work, especially Beyond Instinct. The dialogue isn't very good between the characters and there's never really a feeling of suspense in the story. The "bad guys" are supposed to be super-secret plotters who have tremendous resources available to them, but they are extremely inept at stopping the agents from achieving their goal. Vaughn and her group have little real trouble confusing and evading their opponents and getting into Iraq. The way they deal with the facility is probably meant to show their level of training, but it doesn't create the suspense that a reader would expect. The rate that a relationship develops between Sedona and Vaughn doesn't match with the feelings they each express about past relationships, so their situation doesn't feel "real." The story might have been stronger if the relationship had been left out. Finally, there is a supernatural aspect to the story that, for those who don't believe in that type of thing, can be very trying and contributes to the disjointed feeling of the book.

Above Reproach is not a poorly written book. For someone who is looking for a quick read that is fairly entertaining, it will do fine. For anyone who has read Ames' recent books, it doesn't quite come up to the ability she has shown recently; therefore, the book may be somewhat disappointing. For fans of suspense novels, this one is tepid and there are others that demonstrate the genre better. Those who are Ames fans and follow her work will read and enjoy this. Those who are genre fans may want to find something else.

My husband and his family speak Lao and I want to learn more so I can understand somethings with out it needing to have it translated, I love that you can look words up in either lao or english and see how it is translated.

The Best Phrasebook for Lao

I think this is the best phrasebook I've seen for the Lao language. I've used it on several trips to Laos and shared it with some Lao friends in America. They were very impressed that the sentences were written as they really say them, not like you see in a textbook. The book is from a New York publisher of language books that publishes books with high standards.
Other good things I found about the book:
1. It has a clear, concise grammar section
2. the selection of words and topics is comprehensive
3. the book is arranged in a way that is very easy to use
4. the introductory description of Lao is interesting and informative
I'd also like to say that the pronunciation system is the easiest I've seen. Tones are marked by lines that show the direction, which makes pronunciation a lot more clear than other books (this is also a problem with Thai). While there is no Lao script in the book the pronunciation can be figured out from the pronunciation chart in the front of the book. I think this book would be useful for people studying Lao, not only for travellers. Thank you Mr. Higbie for a creating a wonderful contribution to my library of S.E.Asian language books.

:Im paid to do research that requires use of a dictionary. thats not a dictionary, its a slim phrasebook.
:it can be useful for a person touring in the country its language is.

Singh utilizes an effective narrative style and intersperses fascinating events and people in this abridged version of his adult book of the same title (Doubleday, 1999). The text, illustrations, charts, and tables are the same. A few chapters have been omitted here, yet the overall flow of the book remains smooth. The difference between steganography and cryptography is discussed, as are the two forms of cryptography: transposition and substitution. A detailed history of secret codes is provided, from Herodotus's earliest accounts of secret messages to Arab cryptographers, Mary Queen of Scots, the German Enigma machine, and the Navajo code talkers. Current work on secret codes and their importance in today's society of Internet commerce are discussed. The last chapter, "The Codebreaker's Challenge," consists of four cryptograms. No solutions are given, but the methods to solve them are discussed. Unfortunately, the glossary from the original title is missing in this version. This book will be a popular addition to any YA collection, especially where secret codes and spy books are popular.

The Code Book is a delightful treatment of the subject of cryptography. It is a nice combination of history, science, warfare and politics.
The author uses interesting historical events as background to narrate the different phases of what might be called the mainstream developments of cryptography and cryptanalysis. It is a captivating presentation.
The book started off with the story of Queen Mary of Scotland, and went on to cover the Caesar cipher, Vigen�re cipher, the famous Enigma, the super-secret Colossus, and the modern day computer based encryption and decryption developments. The author also threw in a couple of interesting "sideline" stories, such as the Beale cipher, the Rosetta Stone, and the Navajo "code talkers" who played a key role in the Pacific theater during WWII.
My teenage son used to complain that most of the difficult subjects he learned in school would never have any use in real life. I gave him a copy of this book. The book is a compelling story of how science, engineering, mathematics, computer, linguistics, psychology are all critical pieces of this all-important game.
There are more technical treatises on this subject, and there are more lengthy and nuanced historical accounts on military intelligence as well. But this book is undoubtedly the best introduction to this uniquely fascinating subject.

A History of Ciphers, With Proper Credit for the Cracking of ENIGMA

Singh has provided the reader a delightful history of encryption, beginning with 16th-century codes, proceeding with the mechanized ones, and concluding with modern computer-based systems. He points out how modern encryption is being used to thwart the counterfeiting of dollars, and rejects the so-called Bible Code.

Singh also touches on the intricacies of language, and discusses the difficulty of deciphering the Egyptian hieroglyphics. This involved the decoding of a language that no one speaks today, and one which has no close relatives among modern languages. He also has a fascinating account of the Navajo Indians and their unique language, and how their conversations were used to keep the Japanese in the dark during WWII.

When in comes to the German ENIGMA code of WWII, and in contrast to some English-language books on this subject, Singh gives credit squarely where it is due. He traces the Polish successes with code-breaking, beginning with the cracking of Russian codes by the Biuro Szyfrow (the Bureau of Ciphers) during the 1920 Polish-Bolshevik War (p. 144). In the years before WWII, a Polish team of mathematicians headed by Marian Rejewski recognizably solved the ENIGMA (p. 155). The Poles were ten years ahead of anyone else in this field (p. 160). The later successes of the British at Bletchley relied on Rejewski's work (p. 170), and followed the lead of the Poles (p. 243). Alan Turing followed Rejewski's strategy (p. 171).

This book prepares you by opening up your mind from the conditioning of the Norm into the exceptional.

Beware of James Ray's Loose Translations of Spirituality

James Ray says: "The Latin root of the word "desire" loosely translates to de-sire, meaning 'of the father'. Your desire is your Higher Self wanting to manifest. It's your Higher Power wanting to work with and through you. God wants all of your goals and dreams to be humanly impossible. Do you know why? Because that way He is certain to be part of their achievement." - Million Dollar Mindset

A quick search will reveal that the word "desire" ACTUALLY comes right from the Latin verb "desidare" which is pretty straight forward. That verb comes from the phrase "de sidus/sideris" meaning "of the stars". The root here is sidus/sideris--star, constellation. The "sire" Ray is referring to actually comes from an old French word that forms the origins of "monsieur." That came from the Latin "senex," the declarative form of which is "senior." The sense of fatherhood wasn't attached to the word "sire" until the 13th century, long after Latin-speakers had anything to do with it.

This is just one example of Ray's penchant for loosely translating things. Generally, there's no harm in a loose translation. Sometimes, however, loose translations can be misleading, or can represent a manipulation of truth and sometimes these can be extremely dangerous. For example, James Ray's loose translation of a Native American sweat lodge ritual left three people dead in October 2009.

Standard for the field of S/W Reliability

This is an excellent technical book that should be a standard reference for anyone working in the field of S/W QA/Reliablity. The work assumes a mathematical background at the upper division/graduate level. The section on orthogonal defect classification is especially good. This is an essential work for anyone compiling metrics for gauging how well a S/W development effort is progressing. Software is supplied for performing one's own analyses. Meaty stuff for the serious S/W QA engineer! Well done.

The best handbook I've seen on the subject.

Professor Lyu defines, catalogs, explains, and demonstrates concepts and models for reliability. If you're trying to answer questions like "based on historical data, when is the next expected failure," or "what model best predicts my software's reliability," or "when will the software be stable" then you need this book.
True to its name, it is a handbook, so you can jump around and cross reference, but you can also read it like a book.
Note, however, that there is some fairly heavy statistical math. Don't let all the greek letters scare you. It's all explained, and it has a fantastic appendix that covers all you need to know concerning statistics to use the book without the mumbo-jumbo.
To complete your collection, go to the web and obtain a copy of SMERFS^3, which is a software package developed by Dr. William Farr that does all the modeling math for you. Additionally, check out the book Software Reliability by Musa/Iannio/Okumoto (0-07-044093-X). These two things, together with this book will equip you for just about anything you need to measure.

A classic for those who know little to nothing about software reliability, and how to engineer it in. It's more than just "testing the hell" out of a program. You really need to design reliability and safety into your code and its design documents. This book is an excellent survey of the classical methods on just how to do that.

The bonus cd has many tools and methods to make this job more straightforward for the practitioner.

Highly recommended.....great seller, great book, quick delivery, superb condition. A keeper....

The ultimate "encyclopedia" of self help.

I have to admit that I'm a fan of Tal Ben Shahar. His first two books plus his Positive Psychology training course have positively influenced my life.

He even influenced my MBA research orientation when I choose the "Sense of Coherence" , a coping model that Tal advocates, as the core of my MBA Leadership research thesis , which made it initially controversial to my school (dealing with psychology rather than pure business) . Yet it was a great academic experience with a lot of contribution to my resilience.

When this book came out and I passed through its table of content, I didn't expect much more than a "me too" version of his compilation book "Even Happier".

To my surprise, this book turns out to be the best & most practical work for Tal!

Not only that the format of the book is easily accessed through the "lessons" presentation style that can be chosen by the reader according to situational needs, but also the book is written in a style that combines scientific perspectives with inspirational stories & creative metaphors in a literary style.

On the other hand, I find at least 30% of the psychological interventions & advises in the book as novel & never presented before by Tal: Lessons like Loving-kindness meditation, deceptive brain messages, listening to silence and many more, were indeed A-ha moments to me.

The greatest lesson I learned was this: It seems that over- analysis of oneself through dealing with self help books can be a source of misery rather than happiness, real happiness comes from focusing outward rather than onward. That was a real sound advice to me , as a self-help addict reader.

By the end of the book, I realized that Tal has covered almost everything in the realm of the empirically tested self help & P.P techniques.

That's why now I choose to call this book the "encyclopedia" of self help.

The only downside of this book is that it has too much of "good things" that can be sometimes overwhelming. To benefit from the book, I had to go picky & choose what sounds more influential to my life.

But yes, Tal has done it again.

A distillation of psych 1504

I have watched the entire lecture series from psych 1504 on you tube. This short, easily read book distills the wisdom of those lectures into a great source of strength and happiness that can be referred to as often as one likes and whenever needed to bring about a positive attitude adjustment.

permission to be human,learn to fail, and throw the knapsack over the wall are some of my favorites along with the upward spiral of appreciation and gratitude.

Tal, I hope you put together the online masters degree in positive psychology. I have already read many of the books you referenced in class and welcome the opportunity to learn more. I am almost sixty years old, but can still learn new tricks.

Insightful and practical!

This is a story about a man and his family buying a boat and the ups and downs they faced in the first year of using it.
If you aren't that technically minded then this is the book for you. And myself, not knowing much technical information, found this book to be insightful and full of informative things that I didn't know or even consider, such as weather monitoring five days before you set off anywhere!
It contains useful knowledge of a practical nature, in particular the medical kits and medical information and costs of running and maintaining the boat.
It shows both the good and bad parts about your first year of owning a Nordhavn 62, with parts breaking and learning actually how to pilot the boat.
I enjoyed the pictures but thought maybe a few more schematics could have been used to show what was being described about the boat and where it was.
It's written comically and with a light hearted feel to make for an enjoyable read of one family's adventure on their new Nordhavn boat.
And there are some nice bits of trivia at the end.

From Family to Crew to Experience to Entertaining!

From "Family to Crew" was a very enjoyable fast-paced read that I did not want to end! The story documents the author's first year of experience with his Nordhavn 62, "Pendana," a motor yacht designed to circumnavigate the globe.

The author has a wonderful sense of humor and does a great job connecting to the reader. I was especially impressed that not only did he allow his wife to maneuver the vessel but he also encouraged her to do so!

Anyone who enjoys the subject of boats or cruising can benefit from reading "From Family to Crew." It doesn't matter whether or not you are an experienced yachtsman; there is always something new to be learned from a good book.

I look forward to more from this author. In the meantime, I will be reading his blog posts and viewing his YouTube videos about his adventures aboard "Pendana." Quite entertaining!
