Originally written in the late 1970s, this book was untouched for more than 35 years. McLuhan passed away before it went to press, but Logan always intended to finish it. Even though much has changed in the three decades since work on the project was halted, many of the points that McLuhan and Logan made in the era of ‘electric media’ are highly cogent in the era of ‘digital media.’
Looking at the future of the library from the perspective of McLuhan’s original vision, Logan has carefully updated the text to address the impact of the Internet and other digital technologies on the library. McLuhan prophetically foreshadowed the transformative effect that computing would have on �mass library organization,� saying it would become obsolescent. It is perhaps no coincidence that a key theme of the book is that libraries must strive to create context given today’s hyper information overload. The authors believe this task can be achieved by putting together a compact library of books providing an overview of human culture and scholarship.
This book is based on the original text that McLuhan and Logan wrote. Logan’s updates are integrated in the main text and clearly identified by markers. This preserves the flow of the original text and at the same time provides updates in the context of the original study. Other significant updates include two new chapters: Chapter 6 provides a LOM (Laws of the Media) treatment of the new post-McLuhan digital media, and Chapter 7 discusses the impact of these media on today’s library. A second part to the concluding Chapter has been added to update some of the conclusions reached in 1979, and there is also a new preface.

About the Author
Robert K. Logan (PhD., MIT, 1965) is Professor Emeritus of Physics and St. Michael’s College Fellow at the University of Toronto. He is the Chief Scientist of sLab at OCAD University. He is the author of many books and articles including Understanding New Media: Extending Marshall McLuhan (Peter Lang, 2010). The book follows on from their joint authorship of Alphabet, mother of invention (1977).
Marshall McLuhan (PhD Cambridge, 1943) was a Professor of English at St. Michael’s College at the University of Toronto from 1946 to his passing in 1980. He was the founder of the field of media ecology and author of many revolutionary books and articles including The Gutenberg Galaxy, Understanding Media and The Medium is the Massage. He is the originator of such iconic phrases as �the global village� and �the medium is the message.�

I got this to study for the PE Exam in Water Resources. This is a great book that is clear and concise with great step by step explanations of the solutions unlike a lot of other practice exam books that skip steps, or don’t show you how they got their solution, or used a convoluted and obscure way to solve the problem that will take you more than six minutes. This book focuses on how to get to the answer quickly and clearly. I have the NCEES, PPI, Six-Minute solutions and a couple of other PE practice test books and I have to say this one will be one of the more useful ones for me get prepared for the PE Exam.

A great book to practice Water Resources

As a PE Civil review course instructor, I am always telling my students the #1 way to pass the exam is to practice problems. If you are serious about mastering the Water Resources portion of the Civil PE exam, Water Resources Practice Problems is a perfect companion to help you prepare for the exam. A bonus is that the difficulties of the problems are on the level of the actual exam, making the book a practical and worthy purchase.

Excellent, needs on-line errata

Problems are consistent with the type and difficulty that you will see on the PE exam: none of the obscure PPI questions on denitrifying activated sludge reactors on the moon or other ridiculous topics, just what you will realistically see on the exam. However, the author does throw a few [manageable] curve-balls to get you on top of your game going into the PE exam and re-familiarize some topics that may have been overlooked by other review materials (PPI materials; Six-Minute Solutions; NCEES practice exams). Only negative comment is there are a few typos (transposed numbers) in the solution and an online or easily-accessible errata is lacking to address these typos. Hands down, better bang-for-your-buck than the PPI materials.

Xat’sull Chief Bev Sellars spent her childhood in a church-run residential school whose aim it was to “civilize” Native children through Christian teachings, forced separation from family and culture, and discipline. In addition, beginning at the age of five, Sellars was isolated for two years at Coqualeetza Indian Turberculosis Hospital in Sardis, British Columbia, nearly six hours’ drive from home. The trauma of these experiences has reverberated throughout her life.

The first full-length memoir to be published out of St. Joseph’s Mission at Williams Lake, BC, Sellars tells of three generations of women who attended the school, interweaving the personal histories of her grandmother and her mother with her own. She tells of hunger, forced labour, and physical beatings, often with a leather strap, and also of the demand for conformity in a culturally alien institution where children were confined and denigrated for failure to be White and Roman Catholic.

Like Native children forced by law to attend schools across Canada and the United States, Sellars and other students of St. Joseph’s Mission were allowed home only for two months in the summer and for two weeks at Christmas. The rest of the year they lived, worked, and studied at the school. St. Joseph’s Mission is the site of the controversial and well-publicized sex-related offences of Bishop Hubert O’Connor, which took place during Sellars’s student days, between 1962 and 1967, when O’Connor was the school principal. After the school’s closure, those who had been forced to attend came from surrounding reserves and smashed windows, tore doors and cabinets from the wall, and broke anything that could be broken. Overnight their anger turned a site of shameful memory into a pile of rubble.

In this frank and poignant memoir, Sellars breaks her silence about the institution’s lasting effects, and eloquently articulates her own path to healing.

Bev Sellars: Bev Sellars is Chief of the the Xat'sull (Soda Creek) First Nation in Williams Lake, British Columbia. She holds a degree in history from the University of Victoria and a law degree from the University of British Columbia. She has served as an advisor to the BC Treaty Commission.

A Tale of Courage

"They Called Me Number One" by Bev Sellars is far more than a story of the residential school experience. It is the story of a courageous child and woman who survived by clinging to the pieces of her life that were kind and good. Her wonderful Gran who taught her compassion and even a few caring words from a dormitory supervisor. She held to these large and small pieces of flotsam in order to maintain the courage to survive the beatings and ridicule that were the daily bread of the unholy alliance between the Catholic Church and the Canadian government.

Sellars does not spare the people and the system that abused her, and generations of her family, but she also remembers those who threw a life ring. For all survivors she has written a self-help book equal to any that she reports reading in her adult years. When people ask, "What do the First Nations of Canada want?" give them this book. I know that I will.

Tragedy & Triumph

Chief Sellars spends the first half of this book describing the horrors visited upon her and 3 generations of her people and family by the Indian residential system. The second describes the struggle she went through to overcome the trauma and grow into a leader of and passionate spokeswoman for her people. I can only imagine the relived pain this book cost Chief Sellars, but I thank her for bearing it.

Part of the book's power is the clear, lucid but passionate language in which the story is told. Others have told the big picture story of history's largest genocide, but Chief Sellars puts a face and place to it. A must read.

Well written. Clear and honest. I really got a sense of her life as a child, as a teen, as an adult. Definitely a book that needs to be required reading in junior/high school for all students.
