From Booklist
When horse lovers first start riding, all they usually think about is being on the back of a horse, learning the intricacies and skills of horsemanship. But what about the care of the horse? Hairston, a newspaper and magazine writer on all things equine, provides a nice primer to taking care of a horse. Starting with the subject of housing, the author discusses what must be considered in barn design, including stall size and equipment, tack and feed rooms, and various types of bedding. The pros and cons of barns versus pastures are also touched on. What to feed a horse is covered, with an interesting description of determining a horse's weight and fitness. General horse behavior, manners, and training for catching and tying a horse are matched by information on general health (including first aid). Two sections cover grooming, and the final chapter looks at holistic and alternative therapies for horses, including herbal supplements. A good introduction. Nancy Bent

New horse owner
By Everhopeful
Since I bought my horse a couple of months ago, I have read nearly a dozen horse care manuals. This is the best of the lot. Why? It presents the basic material that a beginner needs, but it gives more detail than most. A few examples: Many books note that the horse owner should watch for poisonous plants in the pasture, and they list those plants. This book offers full color pictures of each plant, which is that much more helpful. Likewise, the chapter on equine health care gives more information than the other manuals I've read, but not so much that it rivals a veterinary volume. I wish someone had told me about this book before I bought my horse, but I'm certainly glad to have it now!

As the photographer of this book....
By Lyn Odom
As the photographer of this book I can't tell you how disappointed I was to never receive the copy promised to me once the book was completed and published. I had to BUY a copy for $25 to add to my archives.

Noting me as the photographer is fairly buried as well, not as promised-in a more prominant place.

WORSE YET - all the generous horse and tack owners who lent supplies and animals and opened up their barns and retail stores allowing us free access to their goods were not given their promised copies either.

Feed stores opened bags of grain, tack shops let us borrow thousands of dollars worth of equipment, people bathed and groomed their horses to perfection for photo shoots, and many supporters weren't acknowledged in the book as promised.

Both the editor and author cut me off at the knees once they had their photographs, which I might add, were provided at a bargain basement price. I also drove hundreds of miles for no extra fee...without a single "Thank You."

GET EVERYTHING in writing when collaborating on a book. The handshake agreement was certainly not honored in this deal. At least I got my money...UP FRONT.

My sincerest apologies to all the people who were so generous with their possessions in the creation of this book. I am sorry you weren't provided with what you were promised.

Regards,
Lyn Odom
