aspects of being a programmer

Programming is not for everyone. Yet Vickers explains that it can be tackled in a systematic fashion. He covers various aspects of what it means to be a programmer. At the deepest level, you need to be able to think in terms of algorithms. And don't let that word scare you. This has several parts. One of which is to be able to decompose a problem into smaller parts, until each can be tackled adequately. Then you have to stitch all these together into a coherent program.

Another aspect is rigour. Unlike some qualitative and subjective fields, like art, you must think precisely. As precisely as possible. To some extent, the ability to decompose a problem into subproblems lets you do some handwaving. But programming is characterised by you eventually having to sit down and code some solution exactly.

En route, the book discusses the use of pseudocode. As formal or informal as your requirements and experience dictate. One need is to be able to write such pseudocode as the first step in doing a problem. The next is to then manually translate that into actual compilable source code.

A perfect instruction set

This book had the perfect advice for achievement of your goals. In my opinion, the first step is gratitude. It follows the concept of giving to receive or the open hand theory. Then on top that, writing your goals down and making them s.m.a.r.t. I loved the simplicity of this book. It's so simple and these are the only 7 steps you need for success. First redefine success to make it more than money or fame. Then follow the steps of this book step by step.

Fantastic book and one of the best books I have read on the topic of success

Does a great job at breaking down all the key areas for success. From the mental to the physical and covering the importance of setting new habits. I liked the fact the book explained a topic, broke down the benefits then showed how to put it into action.

My personal favourite things was at the end where the book showed you how to put all the tips into 1 morning ritual, giving me maximum benefits.

We need to change our mindset in order to truly find happiness, and this amazing little book helps you begin this, helps you learn how to start thinking positively and changing your outlook to a more successful one. Happiness is all in the mind sometimes, and we just need to change our thoughts, set goals and have a great outlook on life!

Got tired of the inanity that is Alfred and the most ridiculous jumping back and forth, from side-to-side by the narrator- depending how the wind blew - made this a shadow of the first book in this series.

Also, even though I know the priests were up everybody's rectum since the beginning of Christianity, and even though it was true that they held sway over most kings at that time, I got so sick and tired of reading over and over: "We will be saved from the Danes if only we pray to St. Judith, or St. Cecilia or St, whoever." You get what I mean. A martyr/patron saint for every day of the week - or almost - and I didn't buy this book to rehash all of my parochial grammar school education.

Pretty sure this is the last book in the series for me. Actually, probably time to find a new author. I feel BC could have written this book without A) Making Alfred look like a buffoon when we know that historically, he was a mighty king; B) He made his point about how the priests were up everyone's bum hole like once every paragraph. God, that gets old in a hurry - even though it is accurate.

I came for a fighting novel, not learning that the Mighty Alfred and his cronies would stay in a town and pray to their God to save them. As if it really works that way. Alfred, who was supposed to be a pious man would screw any man under the sun so that THE CHURCH would get more money. And the need to be call "Lord" - when, up till that point he hadn't done a thing - was so frigging annoying. He wants his men to be loyal but uses the Church to screw them every chance he got.

Does BC actually believe that God takes sides during a war? And if so, how does he choose?

IT GOT VERY, VERY OLD - VERY, VERY QUICKLY!

P.S 70% of the way through the book but don't have it in me to finish it.

A well written story of King Alfred's fight to retain his kingdom

An excellent sequel to "The Last Kingdom", chronicalling the continuing wars on English King Alfred the Great against the Danish invaders in the late 9th century. The story is told through Uhtred, a Saxon warrior from Northumbria who's lands have already been taken by the Danes.

A well written and engaging story of Alfred's fight to retain his kingdom, with exciting and realistic battle scenes, as well as the shifting political loyalties as the fortunes of war swing from one side to the other.

If you enjoy realistic historical fiction, I highly recommend both this book and its predecessor.

A great read!

While it might not be George RR Martin-worthy, I am truly enjoying the Saxon Tales books. I would put them in the genre of historical fiction, as, unlike Martin's writing, Cornwell's books are set in accurate historical context in what was soon to become England in the late 1400's. Cornwell is a compelling writer, and the plots are enjoyable reading. Although I'm just on book 3, they are good enough that I'll be hooked for the entire series!

Misnomer Title

I was disappointed in this book. The title should have been something like, "A Lady Does or Does Not . . . ." The book gives many "lady" imperatives, but does not give as many specifics on "HOW to Be a Lady." An example is the imperative, "A lady knows when it is acceptable to drink through a straw." That's it; there is no further information as to the next obvious question: When is it acceptable for a lady to drink through a straw? Also it bothered me about some incorrect grammar. I know that "a lady does not correct another's grammar," but in these published words, someone fell down on the job of editing. There were several instances of incorrect subject-verb agreement. One would expect a lady to know better or know that she needs aid in the written English before putting ink to published page. Overall this book is too simplistic and does not live up to the title of "HOW To Be a Lady."

Pleasing to look at...not much substance

I bought this to add to my growing collection of etiquette books, but it's less a book of etiquette advice (no real guidelines) and more a book of brief, isolated observations about what kind of person aspiring ladies would like to be ("A lady always knows when to X," "A lady will know how to Y").

Forgive me for pointing out that someone purchasing this book probably already has a fair idea of these kinds of things. That's why they are trying to learn how to become a lady.

The text is sparse, very large and highly stylized with wide margins. It's cute for a coffee table, a gift basket, or other decorating purposes, but if you're looking for an etiquette guide to know HOW to become more lady-like, this book is not for you.

For a catch all reference work, invest in a relatively up to date version of Emily Post's, Amy Vanderbilt's, or Laeticia Baldridge's etiquette books, the first being my favorite. If you'd like something more anecdote/situation driven, try the Miss Manners books by Judith Martin.

Simplistic

This book is simplistic and certainly does not go into much detail. Instead, it is filled with statements of what a lady does or does not do. There is very little advice in this book that is fully explained, but reading it somehow had a calming soothing effect on me. I did retrieve some valuable advice from it. It makes a delightful gift book but perhaps not meaty enough for your own consumption.

A most valued addition to my bookshelf.

I am a sucker for books on applied mathematics. This book ranks among my most valued ones, and is always within constant reach for reference on optimization algorithms. The book covers linear programming, nonlinear programming, geometric programming, dynamic programming, integer programming, and stochastic programming. A wide array of methods which seem impressively complete are covered in this 903-page book. The addressing of the topics is geared more towards making the reader understand how the algorithms were derived (which is welcome, in contrast to chasing up the original research papers), and using them. Just about every method is illustrated clearly with examples - a welcome feature of the book. One minor drawback is that all examples and exercises that are applied to engineering, are drawn from mechanical and civil areas (note: there are also many examples that are mathematical toy problems). Having said that, I must hasten to add that I am an electrical engineer, and I have no problem at all in using this book. Strongly recommended for people who work with optimization algorithms!

Great introductory text for engineers!

This work is one of my favorite all-around optimization books. It covers a lot of ground and it is very well written from a pedegogical point of view. Covered are a full range of linear and nonlinear methods, and for both constrained and unconstrained problem types. Also treated are geometric, dynamic, and integer programming techniques. Many of the algorithms within the book are presented with step-by-step examples which greatly assist the reader.

One downside is that I found the explanations of SQP and GRG methods to be confusing and insufficient. As these two techniques are among the more efficient and robust for many NLP problems (which are essential for engineering applications), this was disappointing. I hope Professor Rao will write a fourth edition with improvements in these particular areas. Otherwise, this book stands out as a useful and practical reference for both students and practicing engineers. If I had to have only one general book on optimization, this would be it. Other useful favorites are "Numerical Optimization" by Nocedal and Wright, "Practical Methods of Optimization" by Fletcher, and "Numerical Methods for Unconstrained Optimization and Nonlinear Equations" by Dennis and Schnabel.

Since writing the above review in 1999, I have become familiar with some of the more recent methods for linear optimization. If you are interested in linear/integer optimization, you may be interested to know that this book discusses the simplex method and its derivatives, and describes Gomory cutting plane method for integer programming. Lest you get carried away by the unbridled optimism expressed in the previous review , please note - this book does not cover iterative linear programming methods such as interior point methods, EXCEPT for a rather good, detailed description of Karmarkar's 1984 method (projective transformation), with a numerical example. Another omission is trust-region methods; however line-search methods are discussed. So if 0/1 optimization, interior point methods, semi-definite programming, trust-region methods is your cup of tea, shop elsewhere. I'm rolling back my previous rating from 5-stars to 4-stars on this count.
