Since shakuhachi instructors a few and far between this book and the tape that came with it got me started. It was most helpful in learning how to read shakuhachi music notation.

Drawing from insightful observation and speculation, Gjoka defines, mourns, and celebrates mortality with poems designed to connect with, and provoke, his readers. Many of Gjoka’s pieces are brilliantly drawn from experience with brutal honesty and nuance, and he is a man’s poet. While he uses women in his poems, often to illustrate the injustice of society or the callousness of men, he makes no apologies about the fact that the women are written as faceless representations. In his poem “Glad I Do Not Have a Daughter,” he tells his make-believe daughter that she comes “for the balls of men, who think that you should be pleased / If they spread you and they spray you / With semen.” He is coarse and generalizes both men and women into their most narrow and primitive selves. And yet, exaggerated as they may be, Gjoka uses pieces like these to grieve the faults of mankind and remind readers that these poems are a truth for many. We Shall Meet in Other Deaths is not formatted with chapter breaks or sections, but the organization of the poems nevertheless feels deliberate and follows an organic thread through several themes. Gjoka begins by observing and mourning death as an outsider, questioning the significance of human life with cynicism and hidden pain. From there, his poems explore sexuality, the predatory instincts of man, and whether God created man in his image. Gjoka takes on nationality and the tension of honor and disgrace in the long history of human civilization. In one of his longer poems, “Trust Those Down to the Ground,” Gjoka covers centuries of religious and political unrest with thick footnotes and a masterful tone of uncertainty. But when he eventually ends with “don’t you let little people who reach the peaks of Olympus / Tell you that they are the only legitimate sons of Gods, / For the lighter, higher things will float and will rise,” he eloquently disarms an entire history. In the end, he returns to death, writing several pieces in the first person to describe dying. There is a handful of less successful poems about why he is a poet, but Gjoka comes back to where he started, this time more personally connected with death. There are scattered misspellings in the English poems, but having the Albanian and English text side by side is a wonderful, constant reminder of the author’s experience and perspective. Excellent framework for EA that is further improved through this book.

The Pragmatic Enterprise Architecture (PEAF) developed by Kevin Lee Smith is a proven and increasingly used very effectively by enterprises across the world. This is the 3rd edition that has many small improvements and also placed within the larger and wider framework for enterprise transformations called POET (Pragmatic Ontology for Enterprise Transformation).
PEAF has many strengths and unique points of differentiation from other Enterprise Architecture (EA) frameworks. These include the explicit inclusion of organisation culture and its importance for EA, extensive coverage of the importance and impact of change on people from EA efforts, and above it is approachable, relatively simple to understand and extensively proven and increasingly used in organisations across the world. The book captures this and also educates through its use of example, clear descriptions, and explicit coverage of the usual objections and questions asked about EA.
The book would be improved by the use of diagram captions, larger easier to read diagrams and an index to encourage spontaneous usage.
I absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in Enterprise Architecture and its use and value within any organisation. It is, as usual for Kevin Smith’s material, thought provoking, even if the extensive use of pastel colours is initially unusual for a book of this type!

Handbook of Spirituality in the Workplace

I first purchased the handbook as a reference to use in my academic research. However, after having a chance to read many of the chapters, I included this book as a companion textbook for an Organization Design and Theory graduate class. My students have had only very positive comments about the readings amd the relevance of spirituality in the workplace, which is not the same as inflicting one's own religion into the workplace.

Giacalone and Jurkiewicz provide the first volume to gather a string of experts on the subject of workplace spirituality (faith at work). This may prove to be the first in a series of similar books on the subject, and they have set the bar very high. After reading the book scholars have to conclude that 1) the phenomena of workplace spiritually (faith at work) is real, 2) that it is being taken seriously by management scholars and 3) that it is the next BIG consideration in individual rights, motivations and performance of employees at all levels of organizations
If you consider yourself a management scholar and you have Bass, or Burns leadership books on your shelf and not Giacalone and Jurkiewicz, you may just be missing something.

I pre-ordered this book back in February and received it today. I read it in it's entirety in one sitting. There is nothing more refreshing than reading about someone's journey when it is so genuine. Raw, including the successes but not leaving out the non-glamourous parts along the way. There is nothing sexier than a confident woman regardless of the vessel you've got to work with. Women empowering other women to be there very best no matter what.

Great Book for the Practicing Design Engineer

This book is the classic in practical heat transfer design. The first few chapters cover theory, while the remainder of the book is devoted to specific design problems...accompanied by fully detailed examples. Some readers may argue that it is too detailed (in today's age of computer simulators), however, stepping through details helps the designer gain an intuitive understanding of heat transfer design considerations. From single component to multiple component heat transfer with phase change (including accounting for the presence of non-condensibles), it's covered, though dated in its approach (the book was first published in 1950). In summary, if you are looking for a book that bridges the gap between theory and actual operation, look no further!

Dated but Critical Text

Although this book was written in 1950, the text is still critical. I used the section on direct-contact heat exchangers to design a contact condenser back in 2002. The text is still relevant, the examples current and useful, and some calculation methods still not covered properly in more advanced text. I should point out that although some of the equations are old, they are simplier to use than newer text and require fewer inputs. Besides, when are you going to need calculations accurate to beyond 90%?

A Must for Practicing Engineers Involved in Heat Transfer

When Kern wrote this book, I am sure that he never imagined it would become a classic! Although some of the coefficient equations have improved slightly over the years, the methods developed in this book are as useful then as now. He literally covers all aspects of heat transfer, cooling towers and direct contact condensers, shell and tube, mixed gas condensation, boilers, direct-fired heaters, coils, etc.. You must have this book.

She co-edited the comics anthology, The Big Feminist BUT: Comics About the Ifs, Ands and Buts of Feminism (Alternative Comics, 2014) and edited the comics anthology, Pet Noir: An Illustrated Anthology of Strange but True Pet Crime Stories (Manic D Press, 2007). Regular Show Fans Will Love This Book!

The Art of Regular Show is a great look into the process of creating the animated television series, Regular Show. It provides a description of the creation of Regular Show - showing JG Quintel’s early drawings and sketches - as well as character development, descriptions of the environments, examples of storyboards, and a “How to Draw” section for the major characters. Especially insightful was the treatment of Quintel’s student films, “2 in the AM PM” and “Na�ve Man from Lolliland”, which were to provide the initial designs for Mordecai, Benson, and Pops.

The text of the book brings together Quintel, storyboard artists, voice talent, and the creative directors for a running narrative on the different topics. Artwork that is highlighted includes: Mordecai & Rigby, Benson, Pops, Skips, Muscle Man, Starla, High Five Ghost, Margaret, CJ, Eileen, Thomas, family members, and many of the minor characters seen over the past 5 years.

Episodes like The Pilot, Eggscellent, The Christmas Special, and Exit 9B are given in-depth treatment through the narrative and storyboards. There are also lots of sketches, doodles, and post-its sprinkled throughout (I think my favorite being Mordecai & Rigby watching the Regular Show Premiere).

If you are a fan of Regular Show, or an enthusiast of the animated medium, this book is for you!

An interesting behind the scenes look at an entertaining show. I especially like how they use a mix of concept art, promotional art and storyboards. It's cool how they go into a good number of characters beyond just the main ones.

Great for the Regular Show Fan!

Purchased for 12-year-old Regular Show fan. He rated it 4 out of 5 stars. He enjoyed the book. The book is about the art of the show. It fulfilled its purpose. It showed the art work and the ideas behind the art work. The only reason he didn't give it 5 stars is because he wanted to know more about the original concept behind the show.
