About the Author

The author of Act Like a Success, Think Like a Success; Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man; and Straight Talk, No Chaser, Steve Harvey began doing stand-up comedy in the mid-1980s. This book is Very much on point !!

Steve you are very much on point in this book! I mean sometimes I must admit I do not take time to dress up for work because truly I just can't afford to. However what I have done is two-three days out the week I do dress up for work and boy do I get compliments. I have not got a man yet but I'm sure he is out there! Like you said there is always someone watching and taking note so thank you !

Steve Harvey's books are very helpful and tell you the truth even if it stings. This book and his others helped me with previous and current relationships. Prior to reading his books I did not understand men at all. After reading them, everything came together. This one, in particular, allowed me to stay on the path that would help me to maintain current relationships and is great to read after his other book(s).

It is equally insightful and fun reading as his earlier book. It is not a rehashing of Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man. He explains that he thought he had exposed all there was to know about men in the first book but he was still being sought out for additional advice. One can read this book from start to finish or hop around chapters as needed but just be sure to finish the entire book! SH breaks it down using his own life experiences and that of others. Having been married for over 30 years, I have DH to confirm what the author writes as being generally true. Single ladies, you may want to take his advice along with the other advices you absorbed in the past. Married ladies, this is a nice refresher primer

Stunningly beautiful!!!

This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever had the privilege to read. When at first I heard the news LaVyrle Spencer was retiring, I wasn't really disappointed because several of her later books had fallen flat for me. Now, I'm suddenly struck by the sadness of never, ever being able to read a new book of hers again. The setting is 1950 in a small Polish community in Browerville, MN - Spencer's hometown. Perhaps it's her familiarity with the setting that makes this book come alive. The book opens as the community is stunned by the death of a young wife and mother, Krystyna. No one is more grief-stricken than her husband, Eddie, who is the janitor and bellringer for the local Catholic church and school. Their two daughters, Anne and Lucy are 4th and 3rd graders taught by Sister Regina. Sister Regina has been questioning her vows and now that she is prevented from physically comforting the girls, she questions them even more. As the book progresses, Sr. Regina and Eddie begin to have feelings for each other but are frustrated by not being able to act on these feelings. I'm hesitant to reveal more for fear of spoiling this very wonderful, touching book. Please do yourself a favor this Holiday season and treat yourself to this book!

Delightfully different romance

"Then Came Heaven" is a totally unique romance novel. Set in a midwest Polish Catholic community in the 1950s, it is a beautifully crafted glimpse of a time when the world was simpler and more innocent. The primary characters are a grieving widower and a nun who is struggling with her vocation. Spencer always does a wonderful job of drawing the reader into the emotional lives of her characters, and these two are particularly sympathetic. The majority of the book focuses on their individual struggles before turning to the romance that springs from their mutual respect and support. The love story is very sweet and handled with great sensitivity. I also enjoyed the glimpse into the inner life of the nuns.

Sweet and Simple

Then Came Heaven is my first Lavryle Spencer novel. And, unfortunately, I can only report mixed reactions. I have nothing but praise for the author's tender and heartwarming portrayal of 1950's small town Mid-western life, and clearly well researched and very compelling portrayal of life amongst an order St. Benedectine nuns. Spencer does a wonderful job of developing a cast of strong, credible and diverse characters.
My only complaint is that the plot's romantic development was simply not executed as skillfully as the other aspects of the story. I had a hard time believing that just weeks after the heart-wrenching loss of his wife (my copy of the novel now suffers a little "water" damage in the early chapters)Eddie was already succumbing to his sister-in-law's seduction attempts. And it made me uneasy that Regina seemed so intent on emulating so many little aspects of Eddie's late wife. Too often the budding love affair between Eddie and Regina seemed like more of a continuation of his life with his wife than the beginning of a "new" life with a "new" woman.
Overall, this is a good read. And I'll hope my next Lavryle Spencer might be just a little better developed.

Scholarly, but still extremely readable. Excellent!

Don't be daunted by its 500-page length. TTT is extremely wellresearched and scholarly, but also eminently readable. The first twochapters, on Tradition and the effect of extreme higher critics,should be manditory reading for all Catholics, even those not interested in eschatology. The remainder of the book is an excellent antidote to end-times hysteria; it restricts itself to approved prophecies only, and beautifully explains what Catholic teaching really is on the subject. My only complaint is that there are quite a few editing glitches; that's easily overlooked, however, in light of the overall high quality of this work.

A monumental achievement!

This scholarly book may not appeal to those who want to see sensationalism, but for the reader who wants to read the definitive book on Catholic end-times belief, this is it. Desmond Birch backs up his every conclusion with sound theology. Clearly he has spent a lifetime studying not only scripture, but many obsure Church documents from the early Church. He makes one of the best arguments I've seen for the teaching authority of the Church, which he presented simply as background to understanding the role of Mary in the early Church and today. He is neither gullible nor superstitious, and is unabashedly aligned with Rome--only Church approved apparitions are covered. One of the asides in the book was tremendously meaningful to me personally: Birch pointed out how just about every heresy in history was directly related to a lack of devotion to Mary on the part of the founder of the heresy. After laying all the bricks for a better understanding of apparitions, he discusses in great depth the content and implications of the messages. Everything is summarized very neatly at the end of the book, in case your head is spinning by that time! I couldn't recommend TT&T more enthusiastically. It is a phenomenal study of end times.

This book is excellent and I agree strongly with all the previous positive comments on it. I read this book right after the year 2000. As someone else has posted, I wish the author could update the book (published in 1996) because there is, in my opinion, a bit too much discussion on "year 2000 end-times issues" that now are of less interest (because it is obvious that the catastrophists were wrong). The book could also be enhanced with more analysis of approved prophecies that received few treatment (dreams of Dom Bosco, La Sallete and Fatima, por example). All in all, this is probably the best place to go, if you want to understand the truth on eschatology.

Unashamed is a great read

I have read this book a few times already, each time i walk away with another level of understanding within myself. I doubt this author realized how powerful this book would be and the heights and depth it would minister. God is so faithful. I highly recommend this to everyone whether you dealt with shame or not - it will minister to you in all areas of your life.

As I read this book, the section on creation and formation changed my life. I get so stuck here on earth worrying about the sinful nature of my formation and function (brokenness of physical, emotional, and mental states) that it is easy to lose sight of who I really am. My Spirit has been transformed because Jesus redeemed me back to be who I was created to be - Holy and unashamed - created in the likeness of God, made for intimacy in relationship with Him and others

A candid and needed message

This is a must read for all Christian believers wanting to gain more insight into the effects of shame and hopelessness. Chris Turney does a great job of revealing how shame has affected his life and ministry and what the Word of God teaches to overcome these obstacles as believers. As the Word states that 'we are in this world but not of this world', we have a real enemy in this world that seeks to impede us from the mission that God has for us which simply put is to make disciples. Any other distraction or loss of identity in Christ is from the enemy. In a very real and personal way, Chris sets out to show the obstacles in his life which most can relate to and the journey he took to get back to the place he knows he should be in Jesus Christ. Well done Mr. Turney!

Despite the private nature of their dialogue, the group's members--Bishop, Lowell, Jarrell, and Berryman--left a compelling record of their mutual interchange and influence. Drawing on an extensive range of published and archival sources, Thomas Travisano traces these poets' creation of a surprisingly coherent postmodern aesthetic and defines its continuing influence on American poetry.

The refusal of this "midcentury quartet," as Travisano calls them, to voice a formalized doctrine, coupled with their intuitive way of working, has caused critics to miss the coherence of their project. Travisano argues that these poets are not only successors to Pound, Auden, Stevens, and Eliot but postmodern explorers in their own right. In forging their own aesthetic, characterized here as a postmodern mode of elegy, they encountered significant resistance from their immediate modernist mentors Allen Tate, John Crowe Ransom, and Marianne Moore.

Jarrell, whom others of the group regarded as a critic of particular genius, was first described as a post-modernist in a 1941 review by Ransom that Travisano cites as the earliest known use of the term. In Jarrell's review of Lowell's Lord Weary's Castle six years later, he named Lowell a postmodernist and identified traits, among them the use of pastiche, that are now considered by theorists such as Fredric Jameson as specifically postmodern. And Bishop's inventiveness allowed her to adapt a self-exploratory mode often, but imprecisely, termed confessional to challenging forms such as the double sonnet, villanelle, and sestina.

Each of these poets suffered a devastating loss during childhood and lived through the twentieth-century disasters of the Great Depression, World War II and the Holocaust, and the cold war. The continual tension in their poetry between subjectivity and form, claims Travisano, reflects the plight of the fractured individual in a postmodern world. By arguing so sharply for the importance of this circle, Midcentury Quartet is certain to redraw the map of postwar American poetry.

Enduring scholarship

Elegantly meant and beautifully worded, Thomas Travisano's book evinces his love for the poems of this quartet of poets. He does something that's rare, perhaps too rare, in modern literary scholarship--he considers the aesthetics and poetics inherent in the poets' work with a respect usually reserved for 'thematics.' His scholarship is a marvel of idea and invention, the tone modest yet full of authority. Dr. Travisano is the perfect model for younger scholars in his stance toward his subject, reminding readers of the poets' greatness- the qualities of expression and in their complex relationships with their friends-without the self regard that so often taints scholarly work. The four authors are alive in Travisano's prose; they couldn't have a better scholar on their side.
