About the Author
John White was born in Liverpool, England, on March 5, 1924, and grew up in Manchester. After serving as a reconnaissance photographer in the Fleet Air Arms during World War II, he completed medical training at Manchester University. He later participated in a variety of short-term missions efforts (including Bible smuggling!) and capitalized on many opportunities to encourage Christians behind the Iron Curtain during the beginning of the Cold War.

On June 25, 1955, White married Laureate May O'Hara. From 1955 to 1964 he served as a medical missionary with New Tribes Mission. Later he was appointed associate general secretary of the International Fellowship of Evangelical Students of Latin America.

White emigrated to Canada with his family in 1965 and later completed his residency in psychiatry in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He next filled the post of associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Manitoba and also served locally as pastor of Church of the Way.

He wrote 25 books as well as numerous articles and study guides. A much sought-after speaker, he lectured around the world at churches, conferences and leadership events. During his later life, White moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, helping to plant a Vineyard church there (Surrey Vineyard) and becoming involved in the larger Vineyard Christian Fellowship.

John White died in 2002, but his written ministry lives on, with over 1.5 million of his books in print.

Parables: The Greatest Stories Ever Told

This study's author uses many ambiguous questions to get the point across. The material is good, but the questions are often irrelevant. I feel that a study should allow the reader/participant to come away with application from the study for everyday living and I think that the study fails to do this.

A Fantastic and Groovy Artbook! :)

The book has such wonderful artwork, giving an in-depth at the Art and creation of the upcoming Trolls movie. It's a Fairy Tale with a mix of Medieval/70s vibe to it, the designs are incredible and careful there are some spoilage hints in the book. But overall-this book is amazing and available to buy here on Amazon-carefuly supplies right now are limited and the book comes out in stores Oct 11th..Amazon got it earlier.

Hundreds of Trolls

In the tradition of previous Dreamworks animated films books, this is full of hundreds of preproduction drawings, sketches, layouts .. In addition to the chapters sets, characters and effects there is also a chapter dedicated to the development and full elaboration of a scene (sounds of silence). The only negative point is that the design of the book is sometimes a bit overdone and tacky. For more animation pics books enter in my account ;)

Excellent Teacher Resource!

This book has everything a teacher could want in order to teach his/her students about the people behind the development of mathematics: sketches of the mathematicians, anecdotes, related activities for each person, and the solutions. Teaching the history of math to kids really gives them a deeper appreciation of the subject. I have even developed projects from this book. This is a great tool to begin with.

Well-written exposition of lucid dreaming

I found this to be a well-written, interesting book, but not one of the most exciting or easy-to-read works on the subject of lucid dreaming.

It is a comprehensive exposition of lucid dreaming containing many references to and quotes by other relevant authors and psychologists.

Many accounts of lucid dreams are included, which add to the book's readability.

Gackenbach has found that there tend to be fewer characters in lucid dreams than in ordinary dreams. The dreamers sometimes interact with other dream characters in order to confront if not resolve psychological difficulties.

It is as if the dream characters had a consciousness of their own. “They behave as if they possessed their own perceptual perspectives, cognitive abilities (memory and thought) and even their own motivations.” – P. Tholey.

The authors tell us that many lucid dreamers (dreamers who are conscious that they are dreaming) are not aware that they may be able to control the content of their dreams. But even prolific lucid dreamers have noticed the limitations of dream control.

Kelzer is quoted as stating: “At best, the lucid dreamer is able to take charge of his (or her) personal experience within the dream but is not actually able to control the dreamscape itself to any great extent.”

We are informed about athletes who train in their lucid dreams, thus greatly enhancing their waking athletic performance.

There's a chapter about confronting your demons in lucid dreams. The authors quote Tholey with regard to advice to lucid dreamers who find themselves confronted with a fearful dream figure.

1.Do not try to flee from a threatening figure. Confront him courageously and ask him “Who are you?” or “Who am I?”

2. Try to come to a reconciliation with him through a constructive dialogue.

3. Do not surrender to an attack by a dream figure. Stare the figure in the eyes. If you have to fight, try to conquer the enemy but not to kill him. “Offer reconciliation to the conquered enemy.”

4. After reconciliation, ask the dream figure if he can help you. Then mention specific problems in your waking or dream life with which you need help.

Apparently, lucid dreaming can be addictive. Living in the dream world can become preferable to reality. (Another lucid dream author, Charlie Morley, also mentioned this.)

There is an interesting section about lucidity and healing, discussion of the similarities between OBEs and lucid dreams and the relationship between NDEs, UFO experiences, meditation and lucid dreaming.

We are briefed about the initial experiments confirming the validity of lucid dreaming and that it mostly occurs during REM sleep.

In conclusion I would say that this is a quite comprehensive account of lucid dreaming, including many dream examples, but I don't think I learnt anything new. In my view, it is not a “must-read”, but an optional addition to one's collection of books on the subject.
