This book, while somewhat dated (written while Stalin still ruled), is still frighteningly accurate and applicable to events unfolding even now. I found it difficult to read only in the sense that I did not want to believe that words written a few years before I was born could still so accurately portray the world and events that I see today.

As Relevant Today as it Was in 1951

This is a 60+ year-old book that retains its fascination because the varieties of ‘true believers’ persist, along with the results of radical actions. Essentially, Hoffer looks at multiple, seemingly heterogeneous movements, from Christianity to National Socialism and observes their leadership and, more important, their followers. He identifies the traits of those leaders and followers and records them in a succession of discussions—125 numbered divisions in a book of approximately 170 pp.

While he has done his homework in examining the movements he does not discuss one or a handful in depth. This is not historiography. It is more a collection of observations that flow from his own readings in history. With the large number of separate discussions the result is something like reading Pascal or Wittgenstein. One is presented with many unified discussions but the most powerful aspect of the book is the manner in which it breaks into single, quotable sentences. These are the rocks polished by the river of thought which preceded them.

For example:

p. 14: “Faith in a holy cause is to a considerable extent a substitute for the lost faith in ourselves.”

p. 24: “. . . the character and destiny of a group are often determined by its inferior elements.”

p. 29: “It is not actual suffering but the taste of better things which excites people to revolt.”

p. 33: “Those who clamor loudest for freedom . . . often . . . want to eliminate free competition and the ruthless testing to which the individual is continually subjected in a free society.”

p. 116: “There can be no mass movement without some deliberate misrepresentation of facts.”

p. 133: “However much the protesting man of words sees himself as the champion of the downtrodden and injured, the grievance which animates him is, with very few exceptions, private and personal.”

p. 144: “Whence come the fanatics? Mostly from the ranks of the noncreative men of words.”

Ultimately, this is a phenomenological study of human behavior in mass movements. Its key, overarching theme is the notion that the true believer suffers from some personal form of alienation or failure which pushes him to seek an alternative society in which he can comfortably fit. This is powerful stuff, endlessly suggestive and continuing in its relevance for our present condition. Highly recommended.

An interesting way of viewing and sorting out the similarities and differences in historical popular movements. Surprisingly, the far left and the far right can be indistinguishable from each other from the viewpoint of what it's like to live under them. Hoffer compares the personality types and motivations common to both movements resulting in highly predictable behavior and social results. From religion to politics the paradigm holds true; the human experience is usually optimal when common sense rules. You would do well to read the book as it expresses these ideas much better than I do. The proof of the thesis lies in the fact that the book, written in the 1950's, was correct in it's predictions over the last sixty five years. This way of thinking helps to envision the results of today's decisions.

Good attempt to cover an often ignored area.

In the preface, the author candidly admits he is not a historian or an expert in engines, he is just a history buff interested in aircraft engines that was "tired of waiting" for somebody else to write this book.

The book is dated. While that makes for one or two odd passages referring to modern engines, that has little or nothing to do with 95% of that discusses older aircraft engines. As the author implied, the true value of this book is that it covers in-depth a subject that is really ignored elsewhere. For all the books on aircraft, very little has been published on the engine development. That makes it challenging to compare, because there is no competition.

The book is well written, but there are a few errors that the editor should have caught. For example, on page 222, one paragraph begins to insert (presumably) German words. I read "Der extensions", "piston und kompressing some of the kraftstoffe", and I have no idea what "upgesticken" means.

For a humble history buff, the author is decidedly opinionated, even cynical at times. He makes several emphatic statements about poor design, engineering decisions, and other matters. Perhaps if he supported his statements with authoritative sources, but the reader is just left with his opinion. One irony was a negative comment (originally published in 1981) on the commercial failure of the Wankel rotary engine - just as Mazda started a 10 year run of explosive sales of rotary powered sports cars.

Graphics are the biggest drawback to this book. Point blank, the drawings and pictures are not very useful.

There are very few cutaways. Most of the graphics are photographs of museum pieces, and none of them are highlighted or have labeled parts. Some graphics are very crude drawings attempting to show the mechanical movement of a certain part of the engine, but they lack reference points to the engine. The reference points are critical to understanding how a piece fits into the engine design.

Unfortunately, for discussing the deep technical mechanics of how something works, clear drawings are essential. Entire sections are rendered virtually useless by the lack of supporting graphics. There are lots of graphics included, they just aren't helpful enough.

Despite mentioning the aircraft powered by the engines, only a handful of the aircraft are shown. This is a minor point given the inadequate graphics overall, but have a thick aircraft reference book nearby to look up the aircraft.

Despite this, the book is still worthwhile. The author obviously made a valiant attempt to document a segment of history that was previously ignored. Cutaway drawings are expensive, and the author probably did all he could with the resources available.

Good reference book but does not read like a novel. It touches on most of the important advances in aircraft piston engines but does not go into great detail on any individual engine. Rather, it gives an overview on many different engines spending more time on engines with significant step forward.

Good coverage, but little depth

Generally I like this book, and refer to it all the time. I particularily like the conversational writing style. However it fails either in breadth or depth, so it you have to supplant this with other books as well.

Forget about trying to get the history or real details on any particular engine. If you're looking for the history or lineage of something like the Jumo 211, it's just not there. But at the same time it could not be considered encyclopedic either. Only the major engines are mentioned, and even in that case there seem to be a lot of missing examples.

Another problem is the low quality of the illustrations and photographs, but they do serve their purpose.

Finally, I couldn't shake the feeling that this book really should have been better researched. The author often asks questions along the lines of "I wonder why they did...", when the answer is fairly well known.

Novel Idea

The best way to describe this book is to think about a lawyer arguing a case before a court and presenting a novel argument with no primary authority or evidence to support it. While the argument may sound good, it is unlikely a court would disturb established precedent in order to adopt such a novel argument. This is precisely what the author Dan Herman is asking of the reader, to adopt his novel arguments on marketing, while discarding established marketing precedent.

In disposing of what Herman believes to be outdated principles of marketing, he introduces his own "new terms," so that he gets you into his movie, so to speak.

Throughout the book, Herman attempts to draw comparisons of his system to a variety of successfully marketed products and companies, none of which are based on his system. Also, there are no footnotes linking any evidence or studies to support any of his theories. Herman does say, however, that "This isn't a textbook, so I'm not going into precisely what each term means and how we research and analyze each and every topic." In effect, Herman is asking the reader to adopt his theories, while disposing of established marketing principles, which he contends no longer work, a tall order to say the least.

The book is well written and has its moments, yet falls short in establishing any evidence to support this supposedly improved marketing system, over that of the principles being used by MBA clones. Since the book introduces so many new terms, it could benefit from adding a summary at the end of each chapter, tying in those key points and terms.

In short, the book boils down to a series of novel arguments. Whether they work in the dynamic world of marketing is anyone's guess, since the author is defining the scope of that success with a variety of his own new terms and ideas, which have yet to be adopted or proven.

So many business books are telling a similar story, but this one's got some new perspectives. I don't agree with everything Herman says, but it's nice to have some different experiences and opinions to consider than just the same old, same old. It's also much cheaper than most textbooks! Worth the money.

Excellent!

I have read several accounts on this subject from Chinese, Italian and French culture. This one is two of my most favorite. Some of the receipt is not only practical but also well writtened. I loved reading this book.

I haven't finished reading it, I'm enjoying it so much I want to savor it...informative and funny at times. He was an eclectic writer with the skills to pull it off with aplomb. When I'm done, I may end up giving it five stars.

The vocabulary was a great review of terminology and made introduction to nursing/health assessment easier because of the defintions of the terminology. The questions in the back were also good practice questions to test your knowledge.

Health Assessment

This was only mildly useful. I purchased this as a required book for the Indiana State LVN-BSN program and didn't find anything in it I couldn't get out of the text book. But if you want a few practice questions per chapter you need it. I stopped using it half way through the semester.
