Heavy Information

I guess for being an academic research textbook it was good. It was a heavy topic and hard to understand but the authors did use real-world examples to try and make the information more plain and simple. I don't think any research book is easy to read and understand but that's on me not the authors. I did learn a lot though so I guess it did the job. Good for beginning research.

Football Scouting Methods

This book caused quite a stir back in 2004 or 2005 when it was mentioned in the media. The author is Steve Belichick the father of Bill Belichick the head coach of the New England Patriots. Steve was a noted scout and coach in his own right back several decades ago. This book was one of the first that I know of that attempted to codify some of the thinking and thought processes that go into scouting football.

Originally teams were allowed a certain number of visits in order to scout the opposition. Steve Belichick was a master at this skill and always found small ways to give his teams an advantage. His skills were passed onto his son Bill who developed an even keener eye for scouting opponents tendencies, strengths, and weaknesses.

Today teams of course exchange game film, input data into a computer database and study that content instead of exchanging visits. The basic things they watch for however are still the same although the exact formations and play types change every decade of course. None the less the original questions and points of study that are outlined in this book were influential in their hey day and still of relevance today in concept.

Since the media mentioned this book it has become a hard to find commodity and has become something of a collectors item. I have an old copy that I keep in my football library. The schemes and diagrams are somewhat outdated (e.g. defense examples include a wide tackle six, split six, stacked 6-2, 5-3, and an eagle 5-4 type of alignment. Offense examples include T formations and Winged T alignments) but the basic thought process is still relevant even today.

Reading this book will give you a good sense of the details that coaches zeroed in on back then and what Steve probably taught Bill as a young man many years ago.

Since I wrote this review I see the book has fortunately been re-published and is now available for a reasonable price. I see I also accidentally referred to Steve's son Bill as "Brian" in one location but correctly as Bill in two other locations. A senior moment to which some of you can probably relate...I corrected it above.

Keep in mind the terminology and examples in all these books are dated now by four or five decades.

Good but not Great

I was extremely excited to jump into this book being this was the man who taught Bill Belichick about football. However, as you read the book you realize that a lot of the information is outdated and not applicable to today's game. He mentioned that few teams pass more than they run, and makes numerous reverences to games that took place in the 50's and 60's. Also, the terminology used has its differences as he will reference a nose as a defensive guard among others. Don't get me wrong there are still many valuable tips and important things to learn from this book; just know that there are quite a few pages that won't be useful in today's spread it out, high flying, pass first offenses.

Taking Scouting to the Next Level

Great for any coach who wants to learn the more technical side of scouting football teams. It is not hard to read, but you need to spend the time to study this book.

If you really want to take away information and become a better scout, this is the book for you. But as I said you need to study it. Take notes, underline, and reread passages as you need to.

Succint, well-organized, eye-openning

Although this text is a little older now, the fundamentals of .NET's IL haven't changed. In fact, it is a testament to MS that they originally implemented such a complete system.

Understanding the IL system is not so easy, though. While excellent in their own right, texts like Richter's CLR via C# really don't do the job, especially when it comes to understanding metadata. The only way to understand IL and .NET is to understand IL and metadata.

Since reading most of this book, I would say that just about every word I read elsewhere about C# or any .NET language is 25% easier to understand. Let's face it, when you know how an engine works it's easier to understand what a, say, turbo-charger does.

Lidin writes well and avoids straying or getting too deep into CLR history or quirks, but he never sacrifices the process facts of how CLR does its job (in spite of almost promising he will in the introduction, then dramatically reversing himself...with intentional effect).

This book is not for the beginner! But any coding pro should find it to be a pretty straightforward experience. Certainly it is easier reading than, say, Grimes' C++ Managed Extensions book.

Understanding how it works is just such a great way to leverage time spent learning. It is time very well spent, and with this text the reader won't have any reason to doubt that at all.

Use this book to learn IL and improve ALL your .NET skills

Inside Microsoft .NET IL Assembler is like a backstage pass to the language that ALL managed .NET code compiles down to and a great companion to any .NET developer who wants to better understand how their code is compiled and executed.
Benefits of the book:
For the 'average' .NET developer there are a number of things you can learn and apply to daily software development. For a start you will learn how to read the IL code from compiled C#, VB.NET or any other managed .NET assembly. This will give you more options in tuning performance (since you will understand the true IL impact of your code alternatives) or hunting down bugs, even if orignial source is unavailable.
Learning the finer points of IL will allow you to use the Reflection.Emit namespace to dynamically create and load your own IL-based assemblies at run time, for extreme flexibility, performance or both.
Knowing IL will also allow you to work with existing assemblies by disassembling then, modifying their code then re-assembling them (IL round-tripping). You can add functionality that is not available to C# or VB.NET (i.e. global methods and fields or unions within a struct) or you can control minute details of unmanaged interop.
Things I thought could be improved:
Since the text is quite dense with information, there could be more context which would help with actual application. Sometimes the implications of what was being talked about weren't clear to me.
There were few samples on the CD, although there were lots of snippets inline with the text.
All in all, this is my favorite .NET book simply because, although you can be a great .NET programmer without knowing IL, you are definately better off if you do.

Inside MS IL assembler

The book meets all my expectations on learning about the Microsoft Intermediate Language Assembler, its commands and how to use it effectively. I haven't made it all the way through the book yet, but, I can tell that the content does an excellent job of presenting the material in a fairly easy to understand way. Do understand though that this book is not a step by step book, but, a learning book that doubles as a reference. Programmers of all levels will benifit from the content and even if you're not going to program in IL assembler, you will gain a deeper understanding of what's going on under the hood of the .NET Language you're using, and how it is translated before moving on to the machine specific code. It can also give you a better understanding of the assembler in case of the need to debug a program at this level, you will gain a much better understanding of what exactly is going on, and hopefully where it went wrong. What I have done so far has impressed me and left me with much more knowlege than I had before.

Outstanding Book on Personal and Organizational Change

I was surprised by this book, being the cynic that I am about change books. I spent 30 years in Corporate America that last 15 working in 'change'. Most books aren't down to earth and what the Professor's say isn't based on actually having done anything. I don't know Dr. Myles Munroe, would love to meet him but he does know change from working around the world with multi-cultural groups on change. He is a Christian and uses some scriptures to make some points but it is not a religious book by any means but he gets his message across.

It is one of the very few change books I would endorse as being real. He takes you through realistic, real world change from beginning to end. Very impressive work. If you're interested in change then here is a great starting point.

About the Author

H. Magdi Selim is professor of soil physics, A. George and Mildred L. Caldwell Endowed Professor, School of Plant, Environmental and Soil Science at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge. He is internationally recognized for his research in the areas of kinetics of reactive chemicals in heterogeneous porous media and transport modeling of dissolved chemicals in water-saturated and unsaturated soils. Dr. Selim is the original developer of the two-site and second-order models for describing the retention processes of dissolved chemicals in soils and natural materials in porous media. Pioneering works also include multistep/multireaction and nonlinear kinetic models for heavy metals, radionuclides, explosive contaminants, and phosphorus and pesticides in soils and subsurface media. His research interests include saturated and unsaturated water flow in multilayered one- and two-dimensional systems.

great reference on STL

This book provides a nice introduction so generic programming with STL. I learned a lot about _why_ things were done the way they were in STL.
Most STL libraries that I've seen have little, if any, documentation, so it's difficult to see the reasoning behind the madness of the details of most STL implementations. It's unfortunate that while STL libraries may be good examples of generic programming (or at least maybe as generic as you can get before being constrained by C++ itself), they appear as a whole to be poor examples of self-documenting source code. That's where this book comes along.
Even after gleaming knowledge of the reasoning behind STL creation, the book has become my regular desk-side reference to not only STL containers and iterators, but also a guide to the requirements necessary to implement your own models.
One area that this book does not cover well is how to choose design criteria when creating your own containers and iterators. However, that does not diminish the usefulness of this book, although it does seem to me that the title may be a little misleading - as STL is covered in more depth then Generic Programming in general, and the emphasis is more heavily on _Using_ rather then _Extending_...

Poor value, unfortunately.

Rightaway, I should say I don't discuss the quality of the book. It
has everything I would like to have when I am programming and need to
look up a function of the STL. This is why I give it three stars. But
nowhere did I see the following criticism, so I have to voice it
out.
This book consists of two parts, part I, and part II and III
(which I count as the second part, see below). Part I is an
introduction to generic programming as used in the framework of the
STL (79 pages). All that stuff, you're supposed to know if you use the
STL. It's all about using the STL, the design, and extending it. Using
the STL is described in lots of web pages, so the book does not
provide much added value to this. Extending the STL is discussed all
in all in about three pages. That was the part I was most interested
it (I am developing a new course about generic programming).
The
second part, making up the remaining 430 or so of the book, are Part
II (Ref Manual: Concepts) and Part III (Ref Manual: Algos and
Classes). They have long been available straight from the SGI STL web
pages, ...
and you can also download them for browsing locally. This is a much
more convenient (at least for me) way to look up the documentation. I
didn't see that the book provided better examples, or different
content than, the SGI's STL pages.
This book will be useful if you
are aware of all the things I said, but still would prefer to browse a
book, or for off-line study. My goal was to see a discussion of how to
use and extend the STL (as advertised in the title). I did not expect
the Reference Manual (which I had already). I am most disappointed in
this.
The difference between User Manual and Reference Manual is
best illustrated by the Stroustrup or Lippman-Lajoie (user manuals)
and the C++ ISO Standard (reference manual). You should be aware of
this difference before you buy this book, and decide if you want it
print in 430 pages or in a web site.

Best math book I've ever had

This book is a fabulous resource... explains things in as clear a way as Linear Algebra can be. If you want deeper understanding, many concepts are described in more depth, and most proofs are given in detail. It's not filled with cartoons and useless pictures like some textbooks, but clear, concise explanations of what turns out to be an interesting and fairly simple area of mathematics.

Can teach myself from the text

I am teaching myself linear algebra from this book before I go to college, and the text is very accessible. I am glad that I picked this text in particular. Starts out with basic things like linear systems with 3 variables, then introduces meatier subjects.

Not a bad but not a great book.

This is an OK book. Not bad for a first introduction to linear algebra and good enough for self studying. There are plenty of exercises with answers for the odd numbered questions at the back. There are a few chapters with various applications of the material but I mostly skipped over those. In addition, each section includes not only computational exercises but also theoretical exercises where you have to prove things and also MATLAB exercises. I think the main problem with this book is that it is repetitive and not well organized.
