About the Author
Philip J. Pratt is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Computer Science at Grand Valley State University, where he taught for 33 years. His teaching interests include database management, systems analysis, complex analysis, and discrete mathematics. He has authored more than 75 textbooks and has co-authored three levels of Microsoft Office Access 2013 books for this popular Shelly Cashman Series and A Guide to SQL.

Mary Z. Last has taught computer information systems since 1984. She retired from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Belton, Texas, where she was an Associate Professor and the Director of the Center for Effectiveness in Learning and Teaching. Ms. Last is actively involved in the Computing Educator's Oral History Project that encourages young women to pursue careers in math and science. She has been a contributing author to the Shelly Cashman Series since 1992. She also authors many instructor resources for database texts.

Great book! Really test and expands your knowledge.

I am very impressed with this book. Not only for the information withing the chapter exercises but with the ability to use your skills in labs and practice database to expand and really test your knowledge.

It has a lot of problems even within the chapter work that goes beyond things that have been covered. It has a color key for those things. So you really do have to think when using this book. It isn't just a step-by-step follow along without thinking and you will complete the chapter easily.

You will know access if you go through this whole book.

I like the way that the sections are placed. The step by step following the chapter makes learning Access very non-overwhelming. I have never used Access before this book and it's making this class easier than I would have thought it would be.

Improving your game

You can pick up some good tips on how to beat your opponents from two-time National Scrabble Champion Joe Edley along with some challenging puzzles in this modest Scrabble puzzle book. I particularly recommend the material on pages 194-202 where Edley suggests that you develop the habit of asking yourself questions before making a play.

For example, question number one is, "Do I have a bingo?" (A good first question!) Question number two is the obvious, Which bonus squares are available, but question number three really gets to the nitty-gritty of good play: "Can you 'hook' any words? Look at every word already on the board and ask yourself if any single letter can be added to the front or back to form another word." Also important is question number four: "What will my 'leave' be after I've made my play?"

Too often the beginning player does not pay enough attention to the tiles he or she is going to be stuck with after a play. Sometimes, Edley advises, it is better to make a lower-scoring play in order to leave oneself with tiles likely (with a little help) to form a bingo.

The bulk of the book is devoted to Scrabble puzzles on various themes, e.g., "Placing your letters on hot spots"; using the J, Q, X and Z; two-, three-, four- and five-tile plays, etc. There is a diagram of the Scrabble grid with some plays already made. Underneath the diagram are the letters in several different racks. You are asked to find the best play. Edley recommends that you do the puzzles by setting them up on your own Scrabble board. I think that is the best way as well since the diagrams in the book are in black and white and so the bonus squares are not colored, and are highlighted only by the letters "DWS," "DLS" ("Double Word Score," "Double Letter Score"), etc. This makes it hard to get a quick feel for where to look. At least that was my experience.

A handy feature is the list of the 97 two-letter words allowed in official Scrabble tournaments on page 7. (I think that has been changed to 96 with "da" now being disallowed.) Interesting features include the weighed scores for answers to the various puzzles. For example, for the puzzle on page 93 there is an "expert" score (for five racks) of 155, a "good" score of 145, and an "average" score of 120. But Edley also gives his score of 164 and challenges you to beat it.

There are 800 puzzles, so this book will last through many a long winter's night; however this is not as good a book as the more substantial Everything Scrabble (revised 2001) by Edley (along with John D. Williams, Jr.), which I also recommend for the serious Scrabble player.

Scrabble Puzzle Book Review

This book is excellent as it contains many ways to improve and versify your Scrabble skills. There are many new games and approaches, which can range from novice to challenging. It contains many new words and methods of setting up the board during play, and if one really examines the games, one will certainly improve their Scrabble skills. As well, there are many games provided that will take hours to decipher and play.

About the Author

CLAUDE H. YODER has been teaching general chemistry for over forty years. During that time, he has published over 130 scientific articles and three texts. He has also won many awards and honors throughout his career, including the ACS Undergraduate Research Award in 1994, and his most recent, the E. Emmett Reid ACS Award in 2008.

PHYLLIS A. LEBER is currently a professor at Franklin & Marshall College. Dr. Leber has been teaching general and organic chemistry for over thirty years. During that time, she has won many awards and honors, and more recently, the Dr. E. Paul and Frances H. Reiff Professor Endowed Chair in 2001 and the Bradley R. Dewey Scholarship Award from Franklin & Marshall College in 2005. Dr. Leber has published over forty articles throughout her career.

MARCUS W. THOMSEN is currently a professor at Franklin & Marshall College and has been teaching for over twenty-five years. He has taught general chemistry, organic chemistry, advanced organic chemistry, and polymer chemistry.

Making the 'leap' to organic chem...

I took general chem, organic chem, adv organic chem and quantum chemistry about 30 years ago ... so I may not be typical person who might order this book. But frankly, I had a great time reading it. So much material that had lapsed in my memory were brought back quickly through the Q&A format of this book... the Socratic approach I guess.

Each chapter of this book covers essential material that is necessary to get right at the start of an O Chem course. It starts with structure and naming which can be very difficult if not well understood at first. The IUPAC rules are emphasized, although some commonly used names are included... very useful. It then progresses to the use of Lewis structures in understanding how organic compounds will participate in chemical reactions, then covers molecular orbital theory as well. This used to be graduate level material, but is now an excellent way for undergrads to understand reactivity and the underlying mechanisms. Of course the math is not as fully covered, but this does not detract from the books value.

Each question is followed by the correct answer. It actually takes a bit of effort to not see the answer of you are trying to solve the problem first... perhaps they should be at the end of the chapter for best effect. In several questions, a wrong answer is also explained, which helps with some of the trickier structures. I found the questions to be very well phrased and and answers precise. The reader must pay close attention!

Overall, I think this book would be most benficial for a person who had skipped a term between general chem and organic chem, and needed a refresher on structure. It will certainly supplement an intro O Chem course if you find the regular text book confusing.

A Good Adjunct

This workbook would be aa useful adjunct for a student of organic chemistry. It is a bit sparse but nicely organized with a question and answer section following the brief explanatory text. I don't know that it is a "bridge" but it does supplement the subject and provides for self evaluation of the basic principles and nomenclature. It assumes a good basic working knowledge of chemistry. In other words, this is not organic chemistry for dummies. I think this book works better as a supplement or review book rather than a bridge.

Good review, not much more to it.

I purchased this book hoping it would give me some guidance for introductory o-chem for advanced high school students. It is ok, but to me it is really sparse on the detail. I would like to see more exercises, more detail about some of the basic concepts of o-chem, and more information in general. This book is like a slightly large cheat sheet.

A Cogent Alternative To The Traditional Cancer Industry Claims

First of all...I have known the author of this book for years...and you can take that in the spirit it's meant...which is this is not new to me..and I have seen first hand the results of what he teaches. But this is not a puff piece...it's an affirmation of results.

Mark is not alone is teaching that the source of the cancer destruction in the body comes from your mind. They are what I would call "Cancerous Beliefs". That is, thoughts and beliefs that you hold onto that are so destructive that show up physically as cancer destroying you.

However he is an author that makes it easy to follow the reasoning...and experience...of how eliminating the thoughts that are destroying your life can turn the cancer around.

The chapters are laid out in easy to follow topics...you can pick out the info you want..yet it's comprehensive enough to give you a real insight into many areas. What works, what doesn't work..myths about cancer cures. Very easy to read and very easy to follow.

I won't take the time to try to convince you that his treatment ideas work...I know they do...but it's up to an individual to decide if it's right for them to find out more about or not.

The book is not a screed..it's not a tirade against the world..but even tempered and even handed..and easy to read. I've bought a number of copies to give to friends of mine who are open minded enough to consider alternatives. I hope it helps them.

The book is great. I bought several copies for family and friends. This book is easy to read and you will want to read it several times to absorb the valuable message that Mark is writting about. Mind and Spirt can prevent cancer and it can help heal cancer.

While attending an alternative cancer treatment center I had several sessions with Mark and he was a big factor in my healing. Mark is a great person and everything in his book is so true. This book will make you take a good look at yourself. When I first met with Mark i didn't think I had many issues, but found out I had many. Now my mind is more at peace than ever before.

This book does not just apply to cancer it applies to all diseases.

The mystery of a little girl's disappearance and the peculiar behaviors of Kate's guardian's brother Christopher soon bring her face to face with the Fairy Folk and their strange, mystical ways. When the Fairy Folk decide to sacrifice Christopher so they reclaim their power on the world, Kate realizes she might be the only one who can save him - and the only one brave enough to stand up to the Fairy Queen.

I like a good classic now and then, and The Perilous Gard was a great recommendation. Kate is a fantastic heroine; she's intelligent, logical, and bluntly honest. She's not afraid to stand up for herself or follow her moral compass when characters try to sway her otherwise. The fantastical elements come courtesy of the Fairy Folk, from their ethereal underground realm to their practice of druidism (nature worship and blood sacrifice). This makes The Perilous Gard quite dark for a children's fantasy, and some of the content (though not graphic) might frighten young readers. But the amount of research reflected and the weaving of Scottish and British folklore (especially the ballad of Tam Lin) makes this story absorbing and eerily authentic.

There were times when The Perilous Gard's lengthy passages and descriptions gnawed at my patience. But that kind of writing was acceptable in Pope's time (TPG was published in 1974), and I understood that. Once I powered through those sections, I was able to focus on the story's true gold - and there was plenty to be found. This is a must-read for fans of Fair Folk tales or older fantasy stories. But truthfully, anyone who's curious about The Perilous Gard and its quietly courageous heroine should give it a try.

A wonderful memory

I first read this book when I was 12 years old in 1975 - I loved it! I re-read it at least a dozen times over the next 5 years - it never lost it's magic for me.
Recently I spotted this new edition in the bookstore while shopping for Christmas presents and I bought a new copy and am rereading it now. I still love this book and would recommend it
to anyone who loves magic and history and the mysterious!

One of the few books I read and reread

Oh my gosh, it's still in print, lucky you!. I must have checked this book out from the local library about a half a dozen times when I was between the ages of 12 and 16. The mystery, the romance, the truimph of the good plain sister over the selfish beautiful sister - just remembering it, I'm tempted to buy it and reread it again and I'm 36! You'll never forget this one.

Recevied quickly and a must have for the library of every new nurse manager and even old-timers will learn from it!

Received book right away in excellent condition as advertised. Excellent content that is especially helpful at this time when every penny is being squeezed and staff nurses are being asked to work with bare bones staffing. Without the support of middle and upper management, nurses will burn-out even quicker than usual. Instead, they need to be part of the solution to identify processes that will eliminate double work and work-arounds that are not safe for the patient and make the nurse work twice as hard.
